Thanks for the compliments. Bukkakiblaster, you are correct, that is Premeire Motor Sports. We bought the boat from them last December. Cannot say enough great things about Premeire. They are wonderful people. If you have a chance to deal with them please do! Spend most of our time on Lake St. Clair and a little at Higgins. We will be at St. Clair full time next year. Going to try the rack storage thing.
The boat is a '98 283 Convincor, twin 7.4L/310hp. Runs 65mph on GPS with 23p Mirage at 4600rpm. Little dissapointed in that, thought we would get closer to 70. Over all very happy with the boat, just not sold on the twins yet. Love twins, but don't think they are the best for this boat. The boat is real a$$ end heavy. Sits like those "beak boats" (Fountains) in the water. The swim platform is almost right on the water. We run alot of tab in the rough to keep the nose down. Performing maint. is a treat also

The cockpit is roomy, the cabin is big, and the sound of twins is just awesome, but I think twin small blocks or a big single (500-600hp) would be the ticket
icon_biggrin.gif

With that said, I am going to throw out a question that I have been pondering. I am wondering if it is possible to convert a twin to a single and would it be worth your efforts or should you just start over? I figure I have 2 motors and one drive to sell to ease the pain of the big single. Where you at Kip??? Can it be done? Or am I just crazy.
I will send a picture of the boat in the water to Chris so he can post it. Compare it to Ji Su Ho's latest picture and you will see what I mean.
Thanks for listening. Let me know what you guys think. Is there anybody else on here who has one with twin big blocks??

Giddy up;

I am with you on this one. I think you would be better off with a single more powerful big block than with twin 7.4's. Combined you only have 620 hp, you get that fairly easy with 1 motor. To say nothing of the extra weight, maintenance, fuel etc... associated with twins. Now, if you really want to move that thing, get yourself 2 Merc. 525's. In any case, the boat looks and is a great boat.

Thanks Vinny P. I love your action shot

Very nice! Now if I had those 2 525's I could live with a little extra poundage in the trunk if you know what I mean.

I think it would be more economicle to build more horsepower in your currant big blocks than to switch to a single. I would also be concerned with transome integrity after piecing in the old cut outs and adding a new one between them.
You could build a pair of nasty small blocks in place of the big's, but it would end up costing as much probably. You could go with some alluminum heads and manifolds to shead some weight and build H.P. at the same time.

That boat sits LOW!!!! It seems to me that the exhaust tips are under water when the boat is at rest. Are they?

Giddy Up

The boat looks great, you are right in that it does set low. My dealer just got a Convincor 300 with twin 6.2's. Took it on a test drive and found the same thing. Performance was 72 MPH by speedo and if you shut it down to quickly you would have water over the stern.

I am no expert but don't see how changing from duals to a single would be cost affective. Where is that Kip

Thanks for your response Ji Su Ho, that answers the small block question. Thank you everyone as well for your responses. Yes the exhaust is very close to being under water at rest. Any waves and they are. We do have SS tips with flappers in them and luckily have had no problems. When we first got it I had a mysterious water leak every time we launched. We used to take alot of water on when unloading at the ramp. I finally figured it out. The dump for the bilge pump would go under water at the ramp and fill up the bilge. I thought those things would have a check valve or something in them? If it is rough out we will get water in the bilge while anchored. The hole to drain the bilge is maybe 6" above the water line.
Speed is not the main focus right now. Getting the boat balanced better and providing easier/do it yourself maintanance are. I have 2 other small issues that will require pulling a motor to fix. Those are another story all together and I would like to ask Kip about them.
If I can balance the boat better, make it easier to work on and pick up some speed along the way......well then I am open to ideas. The speed thing puzzles me. I thought Kip had a 300 last year that was white with red and grey and had twin small blocks in it and it ran 74mph. That would jive with Ji Su Ho's post if it was speedo readings and probably close to my GPS readings. Hot Boat tested my boat in 98/99 with 454's (385hp) and got 80mph out of it

This boat must be real receptive to horse power!!
Please don't take any of this as being negative about Checkmate. This is my second Checkmate, I new what I was getting and thats why I bought it. I love the look of it and it suits us fine, I am just striving for perfection now!

Giddy Up, as to the reference to the convincor 300, sounds like the boat here at Lago Vista Marine. It's trimed in red and gray stripes. The boat was sold but I understand the guy couldn't handle it that well and wants to get rid of it. It's been in New Mexico or Arizona. The guy had an 18' outboard and traded up to this 30 foot with twins. He was overwhelmed. There was three of us in the boat with a full tank of gas when we got the 72 MPH.

How does that sunbrella work for you? Was thinking of buying one. What brand Taylormade? Stable while moving? And have to agree with you on premier motorsports-Great dealer.

Great looking boat!Does it have cast iron exhaust? If so a nice set of Gil or Stainless marine headers would take some weight off and let the engines flow. Then you could always go with aluminum heads ,aftermarket cam & roller rockers. What the Hell,Why not put a couple pro chargers on it,then she'll fly!!

So there Giddy Up,$25,000 and your all set!

The umbrella is made by Anchor Shade. Most boating places (Overtons) have them for $199. I found this one at West Marine on sale for $149. Cannot drive with it up at all. You put the 2 poles together and open it up like a big umbrella. Then I loop the hooks over a cleat on 4 corners. Comes in its own carrying bag too!
We had a 219 Persuader and put a bimini top on it. That was very nice and you could drive at cruising speeds with that up.
