How much Horsepower can an Alpha One handle??

Hey Guys,
I've got 330hp going to my 87 Alpha drive now, when do you reach the Danger zone?

I looked at the new smiley pages, almost got dizzy.. cool Chris.. As for your Alpha, your already at the edge. Mercury only put Alphas behind big blocks for a year or two because they didn't hold up. Around 300hp is the max.

A lot is going to depend on how you use your boat also. If you don't pound it to hard, the Checkmates are fairly light.. you may be fine! We know a person who had a big block powered Pachanga with some mods done to it. He ran the boat for five years with an alpha and around 400hp without a glitch. sold the boat, the new owner pounded it, the drive was shot within a few weeks of changing ownership.

Checkmates may not be the fastest boats on the water, but they are the nicest looking!

You can run fast and still be easy on a drive by knowing how to throttle the boat and different props can be harder on drives or gear cases. The more blades, the harder on the gears. Also, easing into the throttle instead of slamming it. You can run hard without abusing it. Hell, Merc puts a 300 hp small block with the alpha. THat would not be my first choice though, as soon as I hit 300 hp, I say go Bravo.

How fast you going anyways? What boat again?

Eric,
I had a 22 vision with A 383 smallblock that had close to 400 hp with A alpha and had no problems.Getting on plane ez and keeping the prop in the water is the key.

It is also not necesarilly the hp, but the torque. A big block will be harder than those small blocks.

Thanks Guys, The Alpha in question is a short shaft unit on an 24'Enforcer that is currently running about 64mph. I had an 454 19 1/2' Senator with an Alpha last summer.I always took it easy out of the hole, but that midrange power was incredible!

All Checkmates it appears. Great to see that once and a while. All you need now is a Pulsare! Anyways, why don't you get some images up of your boat/motors/drives, whatever you got so we could all have a look...

You need to pull the motor out of that Vette and drop it in your Pulsare! Nothing like a V8 I/O with 4" thru hull exhaust! Pictures of my 87 Senator and my 87 Enforcer are are in "The Showroom" section. Check em out :
