How much trim???

Superjet

New member
I have a 98 253 Convicor. It doesn't have a trailer trim switch. The only thing it has is the trim switch on the throttle. My last boat had a separate switch for trailer trim.

My question is......how far up do I dare to trim it? I am assuming too much trim isn't the best thing for the drive at higher rpm??

I never heard of such a thing ?! You're telling me that from the throttle lever you can trim all the way up to a trailering position ? Usually you have limit switches on the side or your Bravo drive(black pucks) that will limit throttle trim. As you mentioned you'd have a separate button/tab for trailer trim. You definitely need to find out. I'd hate to trim up too far at considerable rpm you'll grenade your universals.

Hopefully some one with a similar setup will chime in.

in some instances the trim in the handle switches are two stage, and the second stage in the switch is for trailer.. its normally quite a bit tougher to engage the second stage..

if your running a bravo drive, the max trim is 21 3/4 inches from center bolt on the trim rams.. alphas are 20 3/4 inches.. I'm going off of memory, but i'm pretty sure the 20 3/4 inches is for gen 2 alphas.. the rest of the drives would be at 21 3/4..

if your trim guage works, or if you have a trim indicator, while on the trailer , run the drive up to is max trim, and mark the guage.. or the indicator..

i'd reccomend getting the limit switch working, someone may have bypassed it sometime ago.. the wired tend to rott of the back of the senders located on your gimbal ring..

I thought that was a little weird too.
I will measure and at the very least mark my trim gauge.
The switch is just a single stage switch and it doesn't appear to have ever had anything else.

Hmmmm.

same thing on my 98 242 convincor.....no trailer button. and YES it will trim up to trailer levels at speed.
ive gotten used to my setup and noted what points on the guage are acceptable. its not bad once you know whats good and bad. actually my guage has indicators in the trim area and then a darker/larger "hash mark" at what i call the "trailer" level......i never get it to that point!!!
actually i have and i gain no more speed or bow lift so now i keep it lower.

use your trim and watch rpm/speed to see your gains and go with that.

let us know what you do

what control is in the boats.. something isn't right here.. every merc, every aftermarket control uses the limits... except in high performance... im thinking something has been overlooked.. I cant remember how long that limit switch has been used.. but it was before i started even thinking about turning wrenches

My 98 Convincor has 2 trim buttons, one for the thumb for normal trim and one half way up the shaft of the shifter for trailering. Yes I have used the trailer button several times when trying to out-run a faster boat, just hit the trailer button a couple times to get a little more boat out of the water (only when the water was perfectly smooth)

ill try to get some photos but i only have one control, the one on the throttle.....thats it. nothing has been modified since ive owned it and it doesnt appear to have any provision for a trailer button.
and....i know exactly what your speaking of, my old boats have had them. frankly, i was surprised that it didnt have one but anyone who is in tune with boating and their boat will know how to handle it.
ill get back with more on this....

It sounds like you have the exact same thing as me.
I guess I will do some measuring and make some marks on my trim gage.
