I was running my son in laws boat with a 4.3L Merc with a gen 1 alpha. I was just starting to pull him skiing and we heard a thump. It sounds like the lower gears blew out. We haven't pulled it apart yet but I am putting some feelers out for opinions and if it turns out the lower is toast. Does anyone have one they would be willing to sell. I think it's a 1.81/1. But I'm not sure yet.
The motor runs perfect it just won't go forward or backwards.
Thanks in advance!!

If you broke the drive, a lot of people are switching to the SEI drives. They are a Chinese copy of the alpha and actually pretty good with a good warranty. The cost is reasonable too.

We pulled it apart today. It looks like it was a prop strike. Bent prop shaft and snapped the drive shaft. He's looking for a gen 1 alpha. 1.81/1.

If you have full coverage insurance on that boat and you struck something in the water, insurance will pay for the repair!
