Jump Start Box

Can any of you guys tell me how big of a jump starter is required to jump start a boat or a car? I guess they are rated in peak amps and cranking amps.

I've had this for about 5 yrs. It comes in handy for alot of things being an inverter, compressor, light and a jumper. Its a bit on the expensive side but it worth it too never be let down. You can jump at least 5 times before chargeing that I know maybe more but I always keep it charged. I have an electric winch and it pulls my boat on the trailer everytime. The inverter is nice for running ac stuff while your out too.

I use a Marquette 35-102. Thing is older than me but has never let anybody down. Looks like a small toolbox. Has a full size 12 volt lead acid battery in it with cables to attach to the low battery to be jumped. There is also a remote trigger for boost. It also has a built in charger so you just plug it in at the end of the day for a recharge. Using this thing keeps my batterys, alternators, regulators, ignition system, and any electronic components from being smoked by Mr Electricity. I remember the last guy I jumped from the boat. We were running hard for the dock in the ski 16, had a smokin hot sb chev in it, almost run down this guy in a Bayliner. Its getting dark and choppy and cold. He's got no power. I hook up the jumper cables against my better judgement while trying to hold on to the engine hatch and keep his boat from banging into ours. Anyway this guy touches the jumper cables together to see if there is any juice. Well, they weld themselves together while he drops them over the side. Got real quiet after that, killed the alternator and more importantly, the little black box on the magneto. Luckily the guy's Bayliner fired right up. Took forever to get home that night.

I've got a small jump box, no bigger than 6x6x10 and its works great for starting cars so Im sure that low compression outboard of mine will be a piece of cake. I only carry it if I think I might be playing the stereo at the beach for a long time. Its light and small enough that I should carry it all the time. Fortunately I haven't needed it for the boat yet.

I just picked up a jump starter at advance auto parts. I probably could have left there with some money still in my pocket, but what the he11. They had a 500 amp that sells for $55 but someone had bought and returned the same day. I think I could have got it for $25. When I asked why it was returned, they said the person exchanged it for a bigger one. Now they have my full attention. In the back of my mind, I was thinking, do I want to be 10 miles from the launch ramp and find out that I should have got a bigger one? I don't think so. I got the biggest one they had. 950 amps, but I think I still got a good deal. Retail, $175 store shelf price, $112.99. In my truck and on the way home, $98.57 tax included!
