Just bought a 1979 Checkmate Predictor

THANKS for all the replies guys.

My boat currently has a 19 pitch prop do you think i shoud upgrade to a 4 blade 20 or 21 pitch prop? to achieve my 70 mph goal?
Try a 21 chopper. You dont need four blades on such a light boat, and choppers work well on these hulls. Also take off the whale tail. These old motors were over rated so 70 is highly unlikely. Start messing with props and setback and see what you can get out of her. Here is a pic of my old checkmate w/ the old I6 1350 that ran high 50's low 60's

anyone know what i would have to do to get the metallic flakes back on the bow some have fallen off anf the black is showing.

im thinking 3m spray glue and sprinkling the metal glitter flakes on then getting that clear coated. will this work?
The only problem I can see with that is that the glue will change color over time. Im pretty sure you dont need the glue you can just put the flake in the clear coat.?? Ask Cooprider here he should have more answers than I do.:thumb:

Seems like there are more guys with Checkmates on Lake Lanier than I thought. We should all maybe exchange email addresses so that we can get together on the water????

I did not have time to work on my "79 Mate so I took it over to Bobby at First Mate on 306 to get her water ready for me. My time is better spent on the waterfall/pond job that just came my way....
Better get it done before new water restrictions shut down water features like the one at 306 and McEver Rd. Anyone seen that waterfall??? It must have cost about a million dollars! No Kidding!

Weather is great... enjoy......
Kurt

As far as set up, you need to get a 4"-6" J/p and at least a 23P prop. I agree with Boston, you will not see 70mph(GPS that is) with that engine. I have an Xr2 150 V6 on my Predictor with 5.5" setback and a 26P LaserII. Last time I had the GPS on board I ran 69.3mph @ 6450rpms (to much slip) I have since lowered the engine 1.5" and now get 6100rpms. No gps #'s yet on that but if my speedo went past 65mph it would maybe hit 85 or 90 just to show you how far off speed's are.
If you have any setup questions just ask. I have tried a lot of props on my boat.

well i took her out yesterday and could only get to 57mph. But i think it is because when WOT it would bog until my buddy pumped the bulb. so im going to get a new fuel line so it shouldnt have a problem sucking in the fuel it needs.

That may be a fuel pump issue as well. That boat may be faster than these guys are saying if that's a real 1500 on it. The 1500 was a whole different animal than any other inline 6 like Boston's 1350. If his ran in the 60's you may get close to 70. You need to go to the inline 6 newsgroup for tuning information. Use Outlook or Outlook Express and go to server: news.kraits.org - newsgroup: bigweek.mercury-inlines

Some of the guys over there are the best inline 6 guys in the country and have built and raced them for decades.

Its definatly a 1500 and thats for sure. the original owner who put the 150 on the boat said he got it to 74 before he let it sit for a few years. That was with a 19 pitch so i think im going to step up to either a 20 or 21 pitch.

Ive heard of the screen in the outlet tube of the tank. Ill probably take this out and put an inline filter/ water seperator when i replace the fuel line/ bulb.

Oh and anyone have advice on how to reglitter the bow? Its not looking horrable but it could use redoing.

Thanks in advance.

Hey CheckmateSpeed, I have a buddy that's putting together MX with a 75 Stinger who works at Boating Atlanta who's great with metalflake. Seen him redo it on a couple of Triton bass boats and they looked great, he's probably going to help me with my boat. He's actually a salesman, so he does it on the side. But, he is going to help me on a few other mates, so if you want I can talk to him.

Hemi....... yea... I drove up to Lake Chatuge the other day... it looks full and there was no boat traffic on the lake at all... same as Lake Burton. Hope to have my boat back next week. If you plan a trip, let me know.......

That is speedo speed so it could be faster.

The tach currently isnt hooked up right now so i dont know what rmp im turning. Does the tach wire just bolt on the the coil because thats how it worked for my mercruiser.

Lanier is awesome right now because it is just bass fishers out there. so its calm as hell. even in the big water there isnt much chop.

The speedo speed is usually much faster then actual speed (GPS)

As far as wiring, I have a chart that shows what all of the wires are for. I'll try to get it posted tonight.

It depends on the tach. On my '75 Merc, the brown wire was for the tach and went to the rectifier. That was for old Tach technology. For a modern tach (like my new Teleflex) you have to move the brown wire from the rectifier to the ignition box. There is a post on here somewhere where I posted the diagrams.

Be careful without running WOT without a Tach. I have a 26P prop on my 150hp Predictor and am at 6150 rpms. I am sure with a 19P you are spinning to fast.
