Merc shift cable "direction"

Hey guys, tell me something. I'm going to be installing a billet shifter and have a question about which way I need to install the lever on the backside of it. I think I know, but my boat is completely derigged at the moment and no way to check for certain. So here goes....

If you have the shifter end of the shift cable in your hand and "pulled" or "extended" the cable, would you be putting the motor in forward or reverse???

Haven't done anything yet. I was looking at the lever on the backside of the shifter and it can be installed facing up or facing down. The difference being the facing "up" will pull/extend the cable when the shifter is put into forward. If I clock the the lever on the backside of the shifter down then it will "push" on the cable when the shifter is put into the forward gear position.

I think it has to be clocked in the downward position which coorelates with the info you posted.

It's a Rex "ST" billet shifter.

If it needs to "push" for forward, I have it made. Everything will line up and it can be assembled as shown below.

However, if it has to "pull" for forward, then I am going to have some modifyng to do. In order to set it up for pull/push, the way it s mocked up below would be the only way. Unfortunately, the holes in the cable mounting plate do not match the hole pattern on the back of the shifter housing. I would have to redrill the triangular mounting pattern holes to accomplish this. See pic below:

I've tried indexing bracket this bracket onto the shifter all different ways searching for a way it would line up for a pull/push-forward/reverse setup and there is now way to accomplish it w/o redrilling. This is a picture below I found that shows the shifter setup in the pull/push configuration. It seems to me I am going to be redrilling the bracket. What do you think?
