Mercruiser 454 question

i think you just want consistancy with the compression test but someone may know wht the bottom line should be (in case their all bad!! OH NO!!) i doubt that though!!

are you going to have your buddy replace the gimbal ring or your just talking all the boots???

as far as running it, watch the weather or be prepared to winterize it when your done, can your Merc buddy go with and you pay him for the trip......may be worth the cash for sure!

I'll have him inspect the gimbal, but I'll replace the exhaust bellows, gimbal bellow, and shifter bellow and cable.

I think I'll run it and then let it suck antifreeze in (muffs connected to a hose connected to a 5 gal bucket). Kary said it has worked for him in the past to it shoudl be fine.

when....

are you going to look at it? i finally got an email back, no real info though.

are you done diggin out of the snow yet?

Looks like you have been informed what to look for, If it runs well a compression check is all you need to make sure all cylinders are good, There is no need for a leak down test if you are just checking it out to buy. A leak down test is for a engine you know has a problem and you want to pin point which cylinder or cylinders are bad, rings, head gaskets, seats ,guides seals and are going to repair it without a full rebuild.
If it passes the compression, runs well with good oil pressure, runs at normal temp, smooth no knocks or noises I would say it's OK.
If it does not pass the compression test you know it has a problem or worn out. if you don't want to rebuild or replace the engine you may want to look for another boat in better shape their out there.
As mentioned the gimbal and drive should be checked out. While the drive is in trailer position grab it by the Skeg and see if it will move up or down. If it does you will have repairs. If you do buy it and just have to do repairs to the drive align the engine while the drive is off.
More than likely you may inherit some repairs with any boat 10 or 15 years old, You just have to find the best one you can to keep repairs minimal to none. Or if the price is right what repairs you can live with. As far as parts I have just about anything you would need.
