MERCRUISER 6.2L vs. 350 MAG

FRYED

I would like to here some feed back on the 320hp. Mercruiser 6.2L VS. the 300hp. 350mag MPI. Is it worth the extra cost to buy the 6.2L? What will I gain (MPH)in a 22' or 23' Checkmate?

I have the 6.2 and love it! Just for the fact you aer not getting an outdated motor, the 6.5 is well worth the the 2000 to 2500 bucks for the upgrade. my only regret with the motor is I did not go a little bigger and get the 496. THe 375 hp 496 is only 2500 bucks above the 6.2. If you want speed, go 496. THe 6.2 does have awesome fuel economy and in my boat, the ZT 240, the hole shot is more than respectable. For you, you will want to see what gear ratio would e ofered with either the 6.2 or the 350. I am turning a 1.63 which allows me to turn a bigger wheel. In a smaler boat, Checkmate probably puts on a 1.5. Now,if you are talking a new Mate, which model. THe reason I ask in so you are not confused with some of the new model sizes. The ZT 220 has become a 230 but it is still a 22 foot boat with the swim platform, so it really has a running surface of a 19.5 foot boat. There will be some new models and changes for '04. I would call Kip and have a talk to him. He can fill you in and help lead you in the right direction. He can also provide numbers on different boats and engine packages, as long as they have r&d them. In turn, throw the 250 aside and go 6.2 or 496.

Good luck!

As the saying goes,"Theres no replacement for displacement

" But I'll also say I raced a 2003 22' Stingray with a 350 Mag and It suprised me by running 70 mph (speedo)!I couldn't believe it

I really like that you get 320 hp with the 6.2 and only have 9.0 to 1 compression. While with the 5.7 you get 300 hp with 9.4 to 1 compression. That to me is enough of a reason to get a 6.2 There is also more torque with a 6.2 vs. 5.7 A friend has a 6.2 in a 24 SeaRay, this is far from a performance hull. The boat gets up and goes for a cruiser.

Eric, don't be too surprised by the speed of the Stingray. Hull for hull, they are ALMOST as fast as a Checkmate. The bottom design has good lifting strakes, and they use a notched transom design. They are very close to the top speed of the Checkmate when same length hulls with same horsepower run side-by-side. They will typically outrun a similar Baja. That said, they also aren't quite as nice as the Checkmate when it comes to the 'custom' nature of how Checkmate builds their hulls. The Stingray is like Baja, a mass produced hull.

Checkmates owned: 1995 Pulsare 2100BR/1995 Mercury Promax 225 2.5 EFI. 1995 Persuader 183/4.3 LX V6. 1992 Pulse 171/1992 Mercury XR6 150 hp 2.5 liter.

JW,I guess I'm used to all the stock 350 4 barrel boats I've owned. Usually good for 58-60 mph. Its nice to see how the technology has really improved the performance of those small blocks. Then again Mercury did have the 300 Tempest back in the 80's.300 hp 350V8 with a short shaft alpha. I had a 90 19.5' Stingray 598ZPX with a 260 Merc. Nice looking boat but the weight distribution was so bad It would porpiose too much. Drove me crazy! Sold it for a Mate!
