Mercury Sport Jet wanted

Hey COOP...

You need to specify a 1998 & newer AND that's it's a 175HP or BIGGER model you "WANT"... All the 90, 95XR, 120, 125XR are absolute JUNK!!! Avoid the headache and stick with the Merc V6 powerhead and not the old-school Chrysler inline 3 & 4 motors.

P.S. all the V6 Merc Sportjet powerheads have a unique crankshaft that is DIFFERENT than the outboards, as well as other sport-jet specific bolt-ons like exhaust plate, powerhead adapter, etc. (they are very $pendy if you need then seperately).

Oh yea, whats it for????

How different are the drives, between the inlines and the v's?

Its for a project I'd like to put together next summer.

Coop... the 1997-1998 175 V6 used the same basic jet pump as the 90 inline 3 & the 120 inline 4 but different impeller, gear ratio, and powerhead adapter plate. I have EXTENSIVE research on these if you ever want to call me!

All the V6 motors 200, 210, 240EFI, 250OPTI all used a bigger pump that used a thru-hull exhaust set-up rather than thru the pump housing... a MUCH better design and more efficent pump!

I have ALL the manuals of the different model sportjets including install info, so if you ever need copies let me know. You do know that ALL sportjets require the hull to have a fiberglass "pump box" as PART OF THE HULL BOTTOM in order to mount the pump and powerhead... to be honest, it is a very CRAPPY DESIGN!!! You almost need to find a wrecked boat to cut it out or measure it up to build one correctly. It is NOT an easy task!!!

I always wanted to try a Hamilton multi-stage jet pump with a turbo-diesel in something??? That way you get gobs of torque, fuel efficency, low draft, the safety of a jet still?
Once again NO TIME, NO CASH...

I'm not sure what your doing, but ever consider a Seadoo motor & pump??? The motor puts out MORE THRUST, is LIGHTER, and SIMPLE INSTALL... and they have up to a 215HP supercharged 4-stroke!

Ahhh, there is my question are the pump boxes in the hull the same or do you need a different one for a bigger motor?

I am about 5 boats away from working on this so I got time to plan.

Coop... I think they are all the same but I will double check for you in the "install manuals" when I get some extra minutes.

I do know the ones that ran the thru-hull exhaust are WAY BETTER design wise! I have seem several old-style sport-jet pumps literally "blown up" so to speak from starting them out of the water (a no-no) and the motor back-firing causing the bottom pump plate to actually "bulge" from the explosion. Who knows what happens to the fiberglass surrounding the pump... (the fiberglass pump box serves as the exhaust chamber if you can believe that)...SCARY! It is THE #1 worst design MERC has EVER released!!!

Thanks, I will keep an eye on this guy looks like he deals in this stuff. He has 2 other pumps listed.

If my check came before the auction ended. I would be tempted to jump on it. But reading what jrumon has posted, I do need to do a little more research on these motors before I buy.

Coop... the one complete drive is a 175hp drive, but missing the expensive V6 powerhead adaptor and you still need the CORRECT sportjet V6 powerhead (remember special 13 spline crankshaft and special sportjet exhaust manifold & plate).

Want an "eye-full"... If you check that guy's other auctions, he has two of the 120hp pumps showing the seal & plate areas better along with the stainless steel grills on the side of the pump that let the exhaust out of the powerhead and into the fiberglass boat "box" before being forced out the two small rear exits (the entry to the exhaust is just forward and below the SS grills). The "box" serves as a muffler so to speak (or a fire hazard). This design is a load of SH!T. Stear clear my friend and find a REAL JET to put in it! It will cost you $4K-$7K for a good used sportjet motor & pump set-up. For that kinda $$$$, you can have a nice V8/Berkley that uses LESS gas than the "Sportjunk".

Coop:
I had the chance to RIDE in a JET-SPRINT boat a few years back when I went out west...

OK, it was 14ft aluminum with an all-aluminum Fuel-injected alchol burning 481cid Rodeck... something like 800HP with a hamilton multi-stage full-size jet pump. Think of 0-60mph in 2 seconds and 90 degree corners at that speed (5+G's). It was unreal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If only those guy's could figure out to run them in a lake and not in a ditch???

FYI: My last jet boat was that 176 Larson Flyer JET, it had a 4.3L GM 225hp motor and full size jet pump. Did 55mph and used half the fuel of my buddies 16' Sea-Ray jet with a 175 Merc sport-junk. The only negitive is the weight, thats why I mentioned the Seadoo type motor & pump... light and EASY install!!! The Yamaha stuff is the same way... light & easy! If I could find a PAIR of the 4-stroke motors & pumps, I'd consider installing them in my cat deck boat just for kicks!

So your saying maybe pop a hull out of my Trimate II mold and put the drive in it. Thought about that.

Do you have manuals and stuff about how to install something like that also.

Coop... the INSTALL manual for the sportjet gives just the general deminsions of the hull box needed for the sportjet:

Length, width, height, taper, mounting thickness, and mounting cut-out.

I can get you those (or the manual) if needed.
