Mirage vs Quicksilver

Hey guys, quick question before I buy 1 of 2 props.
The guy I am going to buy from has a 21p Mirage with a rubber hub, used, for $250. He also has a Quicksliver prop, same pitch witha flo torque hub. He says that the two props are identical, except one says Mercury Mirage, and the other says Quicksilver. He says they perform the same, and has used each type before with identical results, its just that the quciksilver is cheaper because it doesnt say Mirage. He says they both come from the same casting. The Quicksilver is brand new and 300, but it has the flo torque hub which would prolly be good at my horsepower level, according to him. My current 25p Mirage w/ rubber hub never has a slip issue, to my knowledge, however I have only spun it to 4200rpm. Let me know what you think!!

They are the same prop and will perform the same! Just like the Mercury LaserII and the Light Speed, same prop for less money. Go with the interchangeable hub, you won't be sorry. boatman

look them up at mercury marine the mirage starts at 15 inch dia for the 19 pitch
and goes down to 14 5/8 inch for the larger pitches

the quicksilver is a vengence the largest dia that there is is 14 1/2 inch
and that is for the 15 pitch they only go to 23 pitch

take the number off of the prop and cross it if you want

the vengence or quicksilver is a trash get you home stainless prop

it will not perform on your boat

i have a vengence and a mirage same pitch the mirage is almost an inch larger dia and holds the boat on plane at slower speeds

the boat trims better up and down

wakes are softer and the boat rides better in rough water

we boat on clear lake and galveston bay with a 19 foot eluder stern drive
if he is throwing in the quicksilver i guess i would take it but you can find a better deal on a mirage than that

when you cross the number for the quicksilver it changes to the vengence

mast newer props have the flow torque hub i wonder if the quicksilver spun a hub and they replaced it or something

have you tried a 23 pitch

the 21 will overrev if you are turning the 25 to 4200

a tempest is more of a cleaver and might work better

bigdave put a 20 pitch mach sterndriver 4 blade on his boat and likes it
it is a cleaver stlye they usually have more bow lift

SneakyPete, Measure the diameter of both props. If the diameter is the same, it is the Quicksilver version of the mirage. They also make a quicksilver version of the vengance which is smaller in diameter and of very little use on a performancee boat. boatman

I've got a 23 Tempest that has a major crack in 1 blade. I guess a prop shop can fix it. I'll sell it for 40.00 plus 15.00 shipping.

I tried that quicksilver prop. I stripped the boat, took out extra life jackets, anchor, bow pad, passsenger seat and all the extra crap. Lake was real smooth. Same speed, but brought me up to 5,000 rpm or so. So I got more rpm, but no more speed. When I was running the 25p I never tried stripping the boat like I did today. I'll give the 25p a shot tomorrow with the boat stripped and see what happens...

66mph on GPS @4400 rpm. 25p Mirage, boat stripped, 1/3 tank of gas.

keep looking for a 21 or 23 mirage i found mine on ebay for 125.00

It's a 14 1/4 x 23 Express by TurningPoint. I had one in a 21" earlier in the year and ran it on my 2000Pulsare w/225efi, with 4 people in the boat still ran 70mph and was hitting the revlimiter. It was a rocket out of the hole and handled great! boatman

Hey pete, I keep thinking about your set-up and I think i know what you need for more speed, more torque. You see I am comparing you to my buddy who has a 21' centurion, low-profile V with a modified 350 and alpha outdrive, he does 82 on gps with pump gas, his engine is modified for RPM not torque and the only issue he has is fear of blowing out his outdrive, he keep talking about building a stroker like yours. He currently runs a 21p stainless 3-blade merc prop and turns 6500 rpm, his engine is built to turn 7K. He ran a 24p and topped out at 72. Just not enough torque, his boat is smaller than my starflight but I am convinced he weights much more with his engine and I/O. that extra weight needs high RPM's with low pitch or more torque, I keep telling him it's fine the way it is but I think he wants to sell it and go to big-block v-drive, he has a serious addicttion to speed. -shane.

Yeah Shane, I was thinking about that too. It seems I have plenty of low end grunt but I run out of steam up top. I have been talking extensively with Vinny concerning this, and I was thinking about switching to Edelbrock E TEC heads, which have 200cc intake ports which would help hi rpm breathing but hurt low end grunt (I am confident I have enough to spare), and a switch to a more aggressive roller cam. I have been juggling back and forth, and can't decide wether or not to make the switch. As it is, I have already bought a Marine Demon carb and a Stainless Marine exhaust with s-bend risers that don't mix till the tail pipes. I have already spent some decent coin for this winter, I guess I can't decide if I should go further at this point. Vinny also brought up the very real possibility of being killed due to a gimbal failure if I push the power to the 500's on an alpha. By the way, I ran my desk top dyno a different way and came up with much more realistic power numbers of 409hp and 460tq, as opposed to the 480's I had been getting previously.

Pete, You might try 1.6 rockers if you could find a used set on e-bay just to see what more lift would do for it

Dave when I was assembling the heads for some reason (I can't remember why now) I opted not to slot the pushrod holes. I think my reasoning was that I din't want to dump too much $ into the heads because they were temporary...Anyways long story short, you need to use a Louis Tool to open up the pushrod holes because the pushrods rub when you use 1.6 rockers on Vortec heads.
