My First Check

Hi I just bought my first Check, A 1987 Eluder with a 1995 2.5 efi Merc For 5500.00. I noticed some tiny stress cracks in the transom, and would like some tips on reinforcing the transom so the weight of the jackplate and motor dont destroy my transom. Any Help Would Be Appreciated. Thanks

Congrats on the purchase Pit!

Welcome to the board. As for stiffing up the transom. How much work do you want to do? I would add a transom plate to the back. That is the easest thing to do. You can also install reinforcement knees to the insde of the transom.
This is a ton of work. But it will not move afterword.

Rednose, Here is the link to my restoration of my trimate. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/groupee/forums?a=tpc&s=8626072361&f=7106095561&m=5856084761

I not only had cracks, I had wet wood all over. I beefed up the transon 3X as thick. Added knees to transfer the force. boxed it all in for a bit more distribution. I don't think it will move. Take some pictures of the transom and underside. We should be able to come up with something.
What kind of numbers are you geting with the 2.5? and how is it set up now.

Wow that looks like a lot of work 175. Ihavent ran the boat yet i bought it knowing it needed a rebuild. Last owner ran it lean and burned three pistons and had a hole in no 5, so i gotta wait about two weeks before i can go stretch it out. The 2.5 has a bob's nose cone and jackplate and a thinwall 26 p prop, and a one piece cowl.I believe everything else is stock .There is a large steel plate under the jack plate extending alost all the way down the transom. The cracks look to be prior to installation of the jackplate since silicon or some other type of clear caulking material was used to seal them. Speaking of trimates my cousin has a '78 w/ a 2.5 offshore that scares the bejesus out of me. Thats the reason i drove 400 miles to get my boat. :)
