I am new to the boating gig and I just bought a 1984 checkmate diplomat I have restored everything on it and put in the water today for the first time and when I tried to put in gear it wouldnt go but I put in reverse and kicked in perfectly. any advice on what could be wrong? I am thinking it is the lower unit but the lady I bought it off said it had a new one in it. but i didnt really check.

Type, Make, Yr, HP of Motor...

Kawboy,
I don't know the quick answer but I know everyone here will need to know the type (i/o or o/b), make, year and hp of the motor to help you better.

good luck

If it is an I/O, the first thing to check would be the cables. If the cable going to the out drive is stretched, you will only have 1 gear. You can adjust it to get forward, but then you lose reverse. Take the cable lose from the shifter bracket that is mounted on the engine and have someone spin the prop while you work the cable by hand. If you can get the prop to lock in gear in both forward and reverse, the cable will need replaced. The problem is that the shifter does not travel far enough to engage in both directions when the cable is stretched. boatman

probably the cable is stretched - remove the cable to the drive from the shift assembley on the engine. first try the control to make sure you have full movement. if the control is good. manually try shifting it into rear - middle position is neutral. i can't remeber which is forward - i think it's when you pull the cable all the way towards you. see if you have resistance. if you do, the problem is either the drive or the cable. remove the drive and try shifting again. if your shifting is good then you have drive issues. do the simple stuff first.
