I am looking to buy a new or used late model checkmate openbow, outboard 17-18 feet. The boats are well contructed and appear to have a good following. Its to bad the same cannot be said for their website. It must be one of the worst for photos and specifications- or lack of. I would appreciate it if some one could tell the dimensions ,weights ,hp limits etc of the pulse [?] series in the above mentioned lengths. What kind of speeds can be expected, etc. Not for looking for super top speeds as I already have a new Allison SS.Is this model pulse still being made? The 02 brochure posted on this site does not even show anything below 21 feet. Thanks in advance to those of you in the know about these boats.

Hey RLL, welcome to the board. Nice Allison by the way! I've toyed with the idea of buying one a few times. Anyway, yes you can still buy the 17' and the 18' outboard Pulse hulls in either open bow or closed bow. The 17' boat is rated for a 150, the 18' for a 175. Both will easily handle more power if you can afford it. Yes, the factory web site is pretty old, and needs updating. The published hull weights were around 1200 for the 17' and 1300' for the 18, but Bill Combs told me he'd like to re-weigh them because he believed they were lighter by a little. You can contact Kip or Mike or Bill Combs at the phone number on the factory web site and find a local dealer.
My 1992 Pulse 171 (closed bow 17' boat) ran around 70 mph with a 1992 XR6 2.5 150 spinning a 26" prop. For ski duty, you'd rather have a 24" Trophy Plus and give up some top end. The Pulse 185/186 should run about the same speed with the 175. If you're having the factory build you a new boat, you can request things like bottom blueprinting, extra glass in the transom, custom colors, or whatever. They are still a custom builder when needed. I've toured the factory a couple times, and you can find my latest tour as an article on the ScreamandFly.com web site.

For the record, Mate is working on a new website. They are well aware the current one is outdated, and from what I have been told the new one is just about ready to go.

JW,
Thanks for the input.I have not yet decided on the model, but want to stay with a small openbow that anyone can operate.I do appreciate the information, and will look for some photos of these models.

The best thing to do is what JW recommended, call Kip at the factory. They have a new 18 foot ZT and I believe a new 19 Pulsare. If you wait for the website, you will probably be waiting for a while... If not too far from you, you can got to the factory to view the models, that would be your best bet. Pictures that Mate can send you do not do the boats any justice, but will give you a general idea...
