Need info about a 1996 Mercury 225 EFI PROMAX

I am considering purchasing a 1996 Pulsare 2100 BR with a Merc 225 EFI PROMAX on it. Current owner claims under 120 hours of total use since new. Is the 225 PROMAX a reliable motor for continuous use? Is it economical? It has an unpainted lower unit the owner says it came with new. Could this be true, did they come that way? Is this motor a 2.5 or a 3.0 liter? I will check the engine compression before I buy it. What is an acceptable compression range for this engine? What is the MAX RPM at cruise? What is the "normal" powerband range? The owner says it comes with a SS prop but can't tell me what the pitch is or the make. I have both a 23 & 25 pitch Tempest Plus from another boat. Will either of these work well on this boat/motor combo? The owner had some exhaust work done on it (a few years back) by a "performance" marine shop. Said some drilling was done to the exhaust for more HP. Anybody have any input on that? Any and all information on the motor and/or boat is much appreciated!

I had a 1995 Promax 225, so I'll try to answer.

First off, they are VERY reliable, if taken care of properly. The Promax 150, 200, and 225 were great motors from 1994 thru about 1998(?). They did a change in the late '90s that caused many 225's to explode, so there was an ECU recall for those newer motors. But if your Promax is a '96 no problem there.
Economical? No, it'll suck gas with the best of them. High octane by the way, don't run 87 in it. It could have come with a non-painted lower unit. This motor is a 2.5 liter. Compression needs to be 120 - 125 on all cylinders to be a good tight engine. Max rpm is about 6500 rpms. The rev limiter cuts in around 6750. The 23 Tempest Plus will be perfect with a Promax and Pulsare, as long as you have the 1.87:1 gear ratio. The exhaust drilling did no good for the horsepower, just made it louder. May or may not have lowered the resale value. The '94 - '98 225 Promax is a very desireable motor. Any mods can lower resale.
