I guess it was meant to be for me to have a Checkmate boat! I just brought my new Pulse 170 home, got her all settled in the garage, came in and sat down, and look at the shadow I noticed on the wall!!! (I haven't yet figured out how to add a photo to this post, so just check out my avatar!) (It turns out my wife had bought a stuffed horse as a souvenir from a recent trip to Kentucky, and she had unknowingly placed it on the ottoman in the living room at just the right angle to create the "Checkmate" shadow!) Funny that this happened on the day I brought my new Checkmate home! Looking forward to having many fun times out on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers with her! BTW, she is a 94 with an Evinrude 150. What kind of speeds can I expect with the right prop?

Welcome to forum and congrats on your purchase!! You'll probably top out in the high 50's low 60's depending on setup. I had a Pulse 170 with a 200hp Mercury, ran 73 gps.

Thanks

Thanks Guys! I am coming from a 1973 Glastron/Carlson CV-16 with a Merc 115 "tower of power" that was supposed to top out around 55 from the factory, but I reached an indicated 62 on the original 1973 Airguide pitot speedometer. My Checkmate has a "water wheel" speedometer. Are they as accurate as the pitot style? I know the pitot style aren't perfect either, but boating on mostly rivers, I feel they would be more accurate than GPS.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to owning a Checkmate!!! As far as speedos go, the only thing that is any kind of accurate is GPS.

:welcome:to the forum! Like Corey said though most boat speedos are not accurate.. Being on a river your GPS speeds will show current flows some. My best suggestion for speed testing would be to run a pass up river followed by one down river with all of the same trim settings and load and average them for your speeds! There are some calibrated speedos out there that can be had but to get a good one I am guessing you could buy a GPS and make several passes and still come out ahead..

Welcome! I'm also from stl but don't boat the rivers except when the meramec is up. Mostly run kinkaid and table rock.

My stock Speedo is always within 1 or 2 mph.

Good luck with the boat!

Thanks fast94persuader! I grew up on the Mississippi and Illinois, so Portage De Sioux to Pere Marquette is a typical run for me. When I was a kid, I skied (slalom) from the mouth of the Illinois all the way to Barefoot Inn in Herdin IL. Not sure how far that is, but it took over an hour, and my hands were all cramped up when we got there. Most of my early days were spent either being towed behind, or piloting a 1971 Slickcraft SS-235 with a 302 Mercruiser.

Thanks dream4ta, nice looking 'mate you got there! I like you windshield. Mine has the optional 5" taller windshield, but I feel it makes the boat look too much like a Bayliner! If you know of anyone in the Midwest looking for the taller windshield, I would be willing to trade, and would even drive to them to do the trade!

:welcome:From what I've seen the pitot speedos aren't accurate but I wish they were. When mine worked it would read high 80's but that was far from the truth. Mine quit this season and I don't feel like finding out why since it wasn't accurate.

Welcome to the forum ---- we're all picture whores here, so hurry up and figure out how to post pics of your Checkmate and where she runs
