New Member Wants a Boat!!

In a nutshell:

different camshaft - for the different running speeds of the engine

different distributor, starter and alternator - all are sparkproof to prevent the big kaboom from not leaving the blower on long enough

different fuel injection systems (if applicable) - marine has to use lower pressure to keep the coast gaurd happy

Often you'll see different pistons and rods depending on what the engine puts out for power.

marine engines have a flame arrestor on top of the carb instead of an air cleaner.

fuel injected engines will have different ecm programming because of the different duties each engine performs

i'm sure there is more i just can't remember at the moment

Ok here is the skinny on the boat. Now I kind of know my way around car engines, but as mentioned above I probably couldn't pick up some bullshit a guy was feeding me about a marine engine. Here is what he said:

It is definately a Mercrusier 350 engine. He thinks it has been modified as a 383 stroker. One of the reasons he thinks this is that it has an oversized harmonic balancer. It has a marine cam, and marine parts, and he has taken in out several times. It doesnt burn any oil and has good compression in all cylinders. From the pics the engine looks pretty clean.

The outdrive is a Alpha One drive. It is a year old new unit. The interior is freshly redone, and the exterior is in great condition. He quoted me at 6500, and 800 to ship here. I think I could maybe get him to make me a little better deal with shipping included.

He said it is rated for 8 ppl ,but will seat 6. What are ya'lls experiences with Enchanters? It is a beautiful boat, and the wakeboard tower looks removeable. Flexibility is a great attribute!

wakeboarding wasn't invented when that boat was built so i'm almost positve that tower will come off.

Align boring just makes sure all of the main bearing caps are perfectly aligned so that the crank and main bearings are perfectly straight. That would be a start. Not all automotive rebuilds would involve that. Past that, I'm only guessing, but if it was mine, I'd be concerned with balancing all of the rods, pistons, etc (put each one on a scale and make sure they weigh EXACTLY the same thing). I would use new rod and main bolts, not old stretched out ones. I really don't know what is recommended for rings, ring gap, bearing tolerances, etc on a marine motor, but I'd bet it's different than automotive use specs.

There has been some debate here in the past as to whether or not a marine engine block actually has a different metal content (more nickel or something) than an automotive block. I'm not sure what the outcome of that was. I also don't know if there is a such a thing as splayed main bearing caps on a marine motor, but I've seen it on automotive motors so I bet it exists. That means that on a 4 bolt main block, the inner 2 bolts are standard, straight bolts, but the outer 2 bolts enter the block at an angle (sort of like toe-nailing a 2x4) so that they are less likely to pull out of the block. That would help hold together the bottom end.

Whew, that was long. Just a few of my thoughts, but like I said, I've never had one.

You know, I started to think the same thing. I notcied that on the enchanters, the windshield is elevated, but it isn't on that boat. What do you think it is?
