new motor for a 283 convincor

How are you coming on steering Bob? Did you break out the plastic $. JP's 40 (boat I sent you pics of) is 950 hp a side and he spent over $8000 for steering. Granted it is bigger and more HP but anything over 75 should be hydraulic. Ever see that video on "real tv" or "you gotta see this" where the two guys get flung out of the boat as it took a hard left? That may have been from catching a bad wave like it said but, with the stock steering arm on, that could be BOB!

It is expensive, but like you said, saftey is # one. Going fast is fun, so I jump in someone eleses water rocket. I am content driving mid 50's (for now) Hope you get it all figured out. XR drives will serve the purpose also. Another guy I know runs them on his 38 Hustler w/ twin blown 540s.

hey dave , i'm planning on the steering as soon as i get a prop which will be as soon as i get in the water which probably will probably be another 3 or 4 weeks. picking motor up sat morning . coupler is backordered from mercury . all kinds of stuff ordered from my marina .all the extras i ordered from the motor builder all winter caught up with me today . i'm anxious to see this thing run , so i can see what else still needs to get bought. thinking about changing its name to cost overrun .... my earlier thoughts of running this thing easy are starting to change .probably take a good part of the summer to get everything right but we're going hunting bajas ...... we're gonna get r done baby...

Leave the poor Bajas alone, that's like taking candy from a baby.

Go for the big fish- Fountains, Donzis, Cigarettes, and my personal favorite Cats!!!

zt, 2 cats come to mind a 24 lib with ob's running 118 gps and a 36 spectre w/575's ...... what ya think ? we have a new bullet comming , should be ok there , a new top gun with 575's i don't think so ......brings us back to baja's....what's your status ???????

There is only one cat down here running 130mph+ that I will not mess with, but everyone else is fair game. Since I haven’t lost a race yet, I still have a big head, and every year I increase my top speed in an attempt to keep it that way. This year I figure anyone who can't run 110mph+ consistently will be very disappointed.

This is what drives me, what drives by you?

zt , i dropped the motor at the marina . still waiting for merc parts. but getting closer . haven't seriously run anyone new in a while , just the same group of friends , and we're all close. if this thing does an honest 80 , i will be thrilled .especially the way it is often loaded ,few hundred extra lbs of coolers etc in the bow.....we use the boat and i enjoy the hell out of it when i can take 6 or more people and their junk and see 70 ??? on the speedo with out spilling a drink !!!!!! it ain't a cigarette , but people will continue to respect the checkmate name . btw do i see silent choice on yours , or do you use mufflers ? how are you working the noise issue on l.g. ?

If you see 80mph under a light load, you will see 70+ even with an extra 1000Ibs of load. I run no more than 7mph slower with the biggest load in my boat.

BTW, you will have big trouble controlling it past 75 with standard steering.

As for Lake George I will have switchable mufflers of some type. The silent choice is gone and CMI big E tops are on order.

steering is planned , will be talking to my install man this week . motor install should start thurs if the coupler arrives. i'm going to have more questions soon on steering , brands , best prices etc . also concerned with lack of room under dash . and the type that does not go all the way to helm . as far as exhaust . i have the gils / corsa captains call . the exhaust pipes have been modified so that the inside tubing goes all the way back to the silent choice. in other words the water is mixing further back than normal. zt keep me posted on what you do on tips / mufflers .jack and jason both think my exhaust system is ok as is but i have something else on my want list.

Don't cheat on the steering, go full IMCO front to back. It's not cheap, but it is top shelf stuff, that will pay for itself in the long run.

Your exhaust should be fine until you add a blower. You know you want to!!!

hemibee ,,,thanks ,,,,,imco steering will be on the back of risenshine soon .however after seeing what happened to bubba , who had steering , i can't help but wonder , how many of us are trying to do stuff we've never done before , ormaybe biting off more than we should sometimes . while it might be very cool to say "i painted that boat or i put a new floor in that boat" its in our face that safety underway is a whole other story . as you know from reading this thread , i was reluctat at first to add the steering because of the cost ,especially after what i spent on the motor . but i was sold before bubba . i will have it in a few weeks. the point i'm trying to make is we're all probably pretty good at "what we do" for a living or everyday...my boats have always been serviced religously by a trained mercury tech,,,the same guy..his eye catches stuff that i will never see or maybe not wholely understand .he is anal about preventitive maintainence . you can have the best high performance parts money can buy but a loose bolt can hurt you .regular maintainence or installation by a trained proffesional may save you in the long run. just my sincere thoughts .

Bob-

That's why I let the pro's do the main work. I just do the tinkering to get everything the boat is capable of. Jason installs the motor, drive, steering and tabs. He also does all the maintenance other than oil changes.

Not to say things can't go wrong. I found a leaking hose fitting on the steering a month into the season, but I fixed it and no harm was ever done.

At these speeds you ready need to do a pre flight checkout before you nail the throttle!
My family rides in the boat, and although I don’t run over 75mph with my son onboard I would like to be there to see him grow up.

Think about it!!!! And be safe everyone….

zt . i'll try and tie in a couple of your replies . first ,i also visit a couple of other sites , but like you , i consider this one and you guys "family" .you and vinny especially wouldn't cut me any slack on the steering issue..and i was given an explanation as to why i needed it that i could understand. i'll have it before i know how fast this thing is . secondly , our family and friends ride with us and we are morally responsible for their safety. i have never met "bubba" or any of you other checkmate guys . but trust me , hearing someone say "he died doing what he loved " don't make it any easier. i don't have unlimited funds like many of you , but i beleive when it comes to the type of boating that we enjoy and the speeds that we are trying to reach , that we owe it to whoever we care about to have the best service / maintainence availabe . and i further beleive that for the majority of us that will be a reputable marine service facility. thanks for listening !!!!!

Bob-

I think you have everything stated correctly except the part about unlimited funds. If I or many other members had unlimited funds we would all have something like ZT330's or convincor 320's with 2000HP or better. I just comes down to where you spend your money. I choose to spend every spare dollar on my boat because no other "toy" makes me happier.

Our budgets may vary, but the goal is the same, and you look to be in the same boat, literally.

zt , what that should have said , or at least what i meant is "like many of you , i don't have unlimited funds"...... either way , you're right we are in the same boat . we always seem to find the $$$$ for the boat , because thats where the enjoyment is !

Jason has the old motor. You gotta have a backup plan......

If we have a problem with the new motor the old one will be back in the boat ASAP. Otherwise it might be for sale soon.

BTW, my first name is Dave I would post it in my profile, but there is no option to do so yet.

I feel kind of stupid for this post. I had not read about Bubba's crash and although I still standby everything I stated, it was not directed at Bubba. I'm amazed no one got hurt. Thank the stars for that!
