Oil power wash?

Rcenter1

Well-known member
Ok, I have the 502 big block aluminum heads, header, elder block intake... My oil pressure builds up in the pan and @ the valve cover, if I tack above 3500 oil spews out my dip stick.. If I tack 4500 the place where I put the oil in blows off as it is just a push in not a screw in. It looks like the engine was built right but maybe too much like a car? It has 1 PVC valve on the stbd side valve cover going in to the bottom of the back of the Holley carburetor. No opening on the other valve cover. Is this why I am building pressure? My last v8 boat had an opening on each valve cover with no PVC valves just open to the air intake filer.? I don't get it the engine runs fine. Any suggestions?

My other thought was maybe he put a different oil pan on the engine and now the dipstick is no longer valid and I actually have too much oil?

Thanks in advance, this is my first built engine although I have built stock engines in the past I did not build this one and I'm a little flustered as I don't know what has been done to it

Wow - the only time I saw anything come up the dipstick was water, and after pulling her out from being underwater for a few days.

Hopefully it's just an over-fill otherwise you're into some $$.

I was worried too but the oil is crystal clear like brand new in the engine. No milky ness or water look to it at all.

Its possible. I would like to see a couple of breathers on the valve covers vented to the spark arrester.

A couple more notes, there is no spark arrester, I will be remedying that tomorrow at the junk yard. I will probably drill a hole in the port valve cover, installing a grommet and run the ventilation to the flame arrester like it should be. Right now there is just a huge elderblock chrome air filter.

The boat does not smoke at all and seems to have good compression but I will put a pressure test on all 8 cylinders tomorrow to verify. It seems like to me if I had that much blow by all my rings that the boat would burn oil and there is no captains call so I can see the exhaust and I see nothing that would make me feel like that's what is happening.

Again I appreciate all your guys help and ideas

That is where I would start. Sounds like the way its vented now, the cam might not allow it to vent properly at the bottom of the carb at the higher RPMS.
Good luck.

Put a spark arrester on today from the junk yard. Grabbed a couple grommets of some old v8s and drilled a 7/8" hole on the port valve cover. Used vacuum and magnet. Installed grommet, installed hoses up to spark arrester and so far problem is solved. Took out on lake and not a drop of oil anywhere, thank you all for your input. Now that the vacuum is different on the carb it is idling rough and sometimes dies. Just need to adjust on the Holley as I plugged the vacuum line on the back bottom. Smells rich to me, but I have never adjusted on a carb before so now to start reading up on that.

Glad to hear its working for you. Adjusting the carb should be a easy fix. Just remember to adjust both screws equally.

Just another example of using car parts on a boat.. Even performance car parts..smh

I installed the breather hose on the right into the valve cover

Good to hear it was an easy fix - amazing how much difference a PCV can make.

I have a straight 6 that blows a little oil through the rear seal at 4800 -5000 so I'll take another look at the PCV - thanks.
