oil recommendations

Thanks guys, That helps me finally decide. As far as the filter goes, I agree that napa has good filters but do I just ask for one for a 91 mercruiser? Probably not. So does some one have a number or an application. For example is it a ford 1a and so forth or is it a regular chevy sb filter.
Does your filter screw onto the block or is it remotely mounted? If it is on the block, then yes, a standard SBC filter would work. I like to find a filter with the same size base and bypass valve settings but ask the parts store what the longer equivalent is. I fit the biggest one in there I can. It adds quite a bit of filter element if you can get one 50% taller if you have the room to fit it.

If you are mounted remotely then it could be different.

That's a great point GF.....along with more filter surface it also gives more flow ---- both a big plus
With the added surface and flow, you don't have to go to the HP series filters to satisfy flow requirements and allow those larger particles through. Best of both worlds.

yeah it is. I mean yes its mounted in front of engine on top. Over the p/s pump.

I would like to add one thing, when my dad was still a dealer, we found that changing your oil before putting the boat away for the winter was not such a great idea. In cold conditions, the motor will sweat and all the moisture ends up in the oil. We had a couple of boats looked like there was more water than oil it was so milky. But it also doesn't take much water to make the oil look that way. After a few times of re-doing oil changes, my dad called the nearest merc dealer and he said with the up and down temps that we have in our area, change the gear oil when you park it and the oil when you get it back out. Just my $.02.:)

Good point. On the other hand, acids are formed as a byproduct of combustion and are absorbed in the oil from the blow by.
