omc 5.8 start up procedure?

I have a 1990 senator with a omc 5.8 and I am having trouble with starting cold. I have a holley 4 barrel carb, let me know if there is a procedure that has works well for you. the boat runs fine after I get it running it just takes too long and jumper cables to get there.
 
You should be able to pump your throttle twice and fire it up. There are three basic functions an engine needs to run. Fuel, Fire, and Air.You may have a problem with your carburator. I would start with the basic carburator checks, namely the choke and the accelerator pump(s). Make sure the choke butterfly is closed when the engine is cold, if so, use your finger to open the butterfly and have an assistant pump the throttle once or twice and see if fuel is being delivered in constant streams to the front two carburator bowls. If not rebuild your carburator, chances are there is more wrong with it than what meets the eye. Inspect fuel filters (how ever many it has) and the filter at the fuel inlet on the carburator.

Inspect your flame arrestor for dirt/debris clean as necessary,

(2) Fire, inspect your ignition system for proper operation, the entire system,
place your key swith to the run position and see if you have 12v at the coil, if not check your neutral safety switch for proper operation, remove spark plugs and inspect for fouling/corrosion, if corrosion is found water has found its way into the cylinder and its orgin must be found. ie exaust manifolds, blown head gasket, ect. Inspect plug wires, distributor cap, rotor and wires, inspect battery cables, make sure they are corrosion free and secured properly. Replace/repair as necessary.

3) Air. While you have the plugs out in step 2, take a few extra minutes and run a compression check. An engine that age should be at least 125 lbs/ft and i'd say a variance of 5-8 lbs/ft per cylinder should run ok.

These simple checks should take an hour or two, and will lead you to the source of your hard start. I ran a marine shop for twenty years, and implemented the AFF (air fire and fuel rule) to every vessel that came thru the shop. Its important to check it all out as more than one issue may be causing your trouble. Our comebacks 100% of the time were because a mechanic got lazy and didn't follow procedure.
