outboard motor well vs bracket

has checkmate ever done an outboard w/o the well ? if not is there some reason , like more stress or something from the bracket , or a feeling that the customer would't pay the extra $$$ for the hardware etc ????

Almost all of the outboard hulls have the motor well complete with the 'transom lip'. I hate transom lips, as they have to have a drain fitting (which leaks over time) and the corners of the lips are a weak point in the transom. They all eventually crack and let water in. So between the drain fitting and the cracked corners, you get a soggy weak transom.
A HUGE design advancement is the motor well on the Pulsare 2100 models. They designed it to have no lip, and the inside of the transom is heavily reinforced. Yes, the motor well is still there, but the design deficiencies are gone. The advantage of a motor well is you can mount the engine much closer to the transom and still get full tilt up. Hulls without motor wells must set the engine way back, to allow the motor to be tilted up all the way.
 
I'm totally with JW.

Keep the well and get rid of the lip.

It's a weak point in the transom area, and it's constantly getting dirty as hell.
 
wasn't aware of the lip elimination . went looking for a picture of what you were talking about , but couldn't find one that was highly detailed .
 
Somewhere on this site is a link to an article I wrote for Scream and Fly. I took a bunch of pix of the factory, partially built Pulsare included...........
 
Question for Kip. Why do some models have a lip and some not? Such as the Pulsare 2100 not having a lip and one was designed into the new 2400
 
The funny thing is, the 1994 to present Pulsare 2100/2100BR is the only model Checkmate outboard that has no lip. The new 1600 and 1850 Pulsare models have the lip..........which disappointed me until I remembered that the lip is used as a reference point for mounting an outboard motor. Without a lipped transom, you have to have a setback plate because outboard mount brackets are all built with the overhang. So in effect, the Pulsare 2100/2100BR is the only model built to come standard from the factory with a setback plate. All others are built to allow a direct bolt-on installation.
