PROCHARGER MARINE ?

I did not sell my boat and now im thinking of a procharger marine M-1 SC 5 psi on my 502/500HP carb. stock bravo-1,there on sale less than $4000 now. I do have 460hrs on the engine, runs super strong and a rebulit lower unit.I do plan on a larger 4 blade prop, any concerns or ideals, I dont really see to many boats supercharged ? glen

gET AHOLD OF BOATN70 ON THIS BOARD HIS BROTHER RUNS A PROCHARGER ON HIS 502 .iT RUNS GREAT AND IS PROBLEM FREE .

If you are looking for cheaper safer upgrades, there are alot of little nic nac shit that will be plenty worth the money. Try an inline Fuel Cool Can. Use a vent to get cooler air to your carb. Upgrade the ignition, MSD makes nice stuff. an exhaust change could make a whole lot of difference. Maybe even a nice set of heads. all the little things add up. just make sure that everything is in synch with each other. Call Tyler Crocket Marine engines, Tyler knows his stuff. he will tell you what is worth it and what is not.

502/500HP, I allready have the MSd 6M, I have seen the cool can in jeg's catalog. Exhaust is the gill wet with basset incerts. The stock rebulit carb is a 800cfm holley dubble pumper with dual 50cc injection. I turn a bravo 1 24p at 5150 rpm now.

You could prolly do a cam and intake change for about a quarter of the cost, or add heads to that mix and be at approx 2/3 of the cost. Just something to ponder, altho those mods don't have the wow factor that a blower does when you pop the hatch.

lets have a lil fun here... why not boost that tired 502 to say 8lbs boost, and throw a 150 shot at her... and see what happens!!! whooo hooo... be a fun run for about 20 seconds!! dang... there is no 60ft time there.. radar it for me.. love to see the #s.

seems to me your 502, that runs right at the moment, doest run like she did when she was new.. the engine for a charging application should be built just that way.. now lets face the facts.. you take an old wore out engine, charge it, you have an old wore out engine thats going to puke oil all over, and your not gonna be satified..

that 502 new, may handle five lbs , but old, even 3 lbs boost will reak gloom and despair.. i suggest you pull the engine, and have it built for your blower application, your drive will need to be upgraded too.. ,, your looking at an expensive upgrade, and no sane mechanic will warranty it much more than 30 days... most of the warrantys are tailight..

i strongly suggest when running a blower application, you have that engine, with all your parts dynoed.. not the parts the engine builder has, and not the cooling system they have.. your engine complete on a dyno, have it set up, timed, and tuned... then pull off what you have to to get the engine back in the boat..

and if you find a dyno guy that will do that... i wanna know them.. mostly i have to go set the engine up... and i get charged to do that.. it costs money... but its cheap in the long run

Sounds like good advise.

At low boost it will hold up just fine. Among my boating friends there are probably 8-10 prochargers. At high boost it usually melts down before too long.

procharger marine

So you think the 496 HO with a 3.5 kit will last. Most engine builders tell me it won't last very long. How many hours do these guys have on their boats.

Most of the boats have over 150 hours on them in stock form at 3.5 boost. This is an intercooled system so it is not forcing unwanted heat into the engine, it is a cooled charge. It is also much easier on the drive than a conventional supercharger because it does not have the hard hitting low end torque. As long as you can keep it stock with 3.5 boost it should last for years as long as you don't run wide open all the time for miles at a time. Remember that this is more of a sprint set-up, wide open for a few miles at a time.:thumb:

i've never installed a pro charger.. however i've whippled a bunch of 496 packages, non ho,and ho... they are all running 5 lbs.. and still hanging.. that 496 is a well designed engine and is tough..

as with any blower type set up engine you have to figer about 200 to 250 hours for a freshin up.. what you also have to understand, it most blower moters have no warranty..

and as far as puttin a sprint set up in a boat.. you gotta be crazy.. what ya gonna do .. a quarter mile and pull out??? hell no... stick them throttles.. and hold em there..

as far as tearing up drives??? its not the pro charger, or the blower, its all about the driver.. or the throttle person>> you need to learn how to drive them.. or get your wallet out..

we have just built three 555c.i. bbc with intercooled m-3 prochargers running 7lb of boost. It has 750 bg carbs. It was very difficult finding a dyno shop to properly tune a carb set-up, but for a stock fuel injected motor I would assume you would have the ecu reprogrammed. If adding any supercharger I would recommend to freshen up the motor.
