Is there any difference between a laser 2 and a tempest plus prop?Is the tempest plus the new version of the laser 2?

Hey Panther, They are 2 completely different props. Not only is the Tempest larger in diameter (14 5/8"), the blades are shaped different. The Tempest and Tempest Plus have a semi clever design and work much better at higher transom heights. In most cases, they are faster than the Laser. Boatman

Tempest is faster UNLESS you have a shorter boat with less horsepower. Then the Laser II will be faster.

Excuse me, I need a lesson in spelling. I meant cleaver, not clever. We all know if it's a mer. on a mate, it's clever!haha. JW, how fast was the 2100br, 225promax with labbed 23 temp.

My setup was VERY quick out of the hole, top end only 73.5 on GPS with that prop (bow-cover installed)

What lake or river do you run on and do you know what the altitude is there? I am trying to compare my set-up to see just how good or bad it is. boatman

Weight is the key. The LaserII works great on light hulls, but the Checkmate 185, 1850, 2100 etc. is too heavy for a Laser II to work good. Yes, if you have a 150 on a 185 or 1850 you may have to turn a Laser due to the fact that the Tempest has large blades that take HP to turn. When my 175EFI was stock with no setback I tried a 23 LaserII and it was not as fast as my stock 23 Tempest. It also didn't hold at all in turns. I couldn't get enough lift to free the boat from the water. The Laser will lift the bow but it doesn't pick up the stern enough. The Tempest with the way the trailing edge of the blade is picks up the stern as well as the bow. Kinda like a Cleaver prop as mentioned above.

I ran a 20P LaserII on a light Chrestliner with a 115 and it ran great.

Wanna hear something wild? I have an older 25" Tempest that turns 5800rpm's at 71mph and some change. A 26" Trophy Plus that turn's 5600 at 73mph. And now for the wild thing, I have a 23" aluminum that turns 5800 at 68.2mph and feels like it has more lift than my Tempest and I can take 90deg. turns without blow-out. If you do the math, thats less than 6perc. slippage!

Somethings wrong. I don't know what you have for a motah, but I assumed you have a 1.87 gear ratio. If that is correct and the speeds you indicate are actual speed (i.e. GPS or radar) your slip with tes Tempest would be 3%, the Trophy Plus is 1% and the Aluminum would be 0%. This just can't be. What gears do you have? Is the Tach correct? Are the speeds from the speedo? Not trying to start something here, just wondering what you got here.

Jim

Also, the tach is correct (or as close as anyone can prove) and the speed's are from a gps speedo verified with radar. The stock Merc. speedo showed numbers in the 80's. But we all know better.

Well, that helps the numbers a bit, but that Aluminum prop must be a Merc. Labbed prop.

Nope, A Merc. or a MW won't even come close! I tried a stock MW right out of the box and could only get 46mph and when you started to trim, it went slower (no bite at all). Then I took this prop out of the box (stock) and tried it. WOW, I was blown away by the performance. I never thought I would see the day that an aluminum prop would perform this good.

I'm just under 1,000 feet elevevation. Temps around 80 degrees, humiditiy pretty high for the top speed numbers. Torquemaster lower unit with 1.87:1 gears. 10" setback. Promax turning 6400 rpms according to my untested Mercury tachometer. 23" Tempest (not Plus) reworked, but had no info on who did the work. Was a very nice all-around prop for that boat with that light weight 225 Promax 2.5 efi.

Jkeiper I have a 96 persuader w/454. I curently run a 24 mirage at about 4600-4800 rpm. I get about 69 mph. Any suggestions, could I hanble a 27 How about number ov blades? The boat with the current prop has no prbblem getting out of the hole even blew a 350 carlson with a 21 pitch out of the hole. thanks John

What Laser II Pitch would you recommend on a 16 ft. Trimate with a V6 Merc 150 on it? I about about to buy a 24, will that work well, looking for some more speed then what I am getting out of it now.

If your V6 Merc is a 2.5 or 2.4 150 and you have the 1.87:1 gears, then try a 26" also. Many have found the 26" will accelerate just as hard as the 24", with higher top speed.

dwmaster:

Sorry! I'm more of an outboard guy. I don't know what the recomended RPM of your engine is. I know there is a bunch of guys that can help you on here though. Maybe post you question under its own heading. Good luck.
