My father has a 2005 1850 with a 150 OptiMax. It is set up with 6" set back and the propshaft centerline about 4.5" below the bottom. We tried a bunch of props and adjusting jackplate height etc. Tried Laser 2, Mirage plus, trophy plus, the only thing that we did not try, that I would have liked to was a Tempest. He is running a 21" Trophy plus as it is the best compromise of everything that we had to try.
On the smartcraft gauges it runs 58 MPH @ 5700RPM. Put 4 people in it it still shows 54MPH. Not a rocket, but respectable for the package. Even with a load the boat carrys really well with a "roost that does not go above the top of the motor. The motor always appears to be running perpendicular to the waters surface. Excellent holeshot with this prop.

He wanted to be able to take the grandkiddy's skiing and tubing, put 5 adults in and have a good holeshot and be able to keep on plane at as low of speed as possible. He didn't want to start plugging cooling holes on the gearcase for engine height, bolting on planing fins, etc..

The 21" mirage plus was only 54MPH @ 5300 RPM. It has a large diameter and is really better suited for a stern drive. It was the first prop we tried because we had one from his old stern drive.

The laser 2 was just as fast top end, but did not come out of the hole as well or carry the weight as good. Not bad, same speed and RPM as trophy plus, just not as good.

My suggestion would be to try a 23" trophy plus and a 23" Tempest if you can. You might be able to run a 25" in either of those styles. It is a bonus if a dealer will let you try a prop before you buy another wall ornament for $500+. Experiment where you can with the various loads you paln on carrying and engine heights if you have a jackplate. Write down your findings for comparison. Good luck.

Hey, Sounds like you are gonna end up with a 23" something! If you are interested, Turning Point has a prop called the Speed Zone which looks very much like the Tempest Plus but is a bit faster in test's.I do sell these prop's and and I have an aluminum version in stock in a 23" for people to try. Using the data from this prop, we can make sure that you get the right size in the stainless steel version. I ran this prop on my 2100 pulsare with 225efi with great results for an aluminum prop(5800 rpm's and 68.2 mph on gps). That is only 3 mph slower than my 25" Tempest. The Stainles Speed Zone will be even faster. The nice thing about the Speed Zone, $350 u.s. with interchangeable hub kit!

Alycat, just curious have you seen any improvements and what is the current top end on your 1850?

thanks

I have a Pulsare 1850BR with Opi 175. I'm running 5.5 setback, 4.5 below pad, laser II (23). Gps 66mph, good hole shot, but doesn't hold well in turns. Oh, it tacks about 5600.

The problem with the Mirage is it has less cup than the Tempest. With tha extra cup you can run it higher with less trim, which is what you need. Checkmates are heavy boats thus you have to run with a high angle of attack to the water to get speed. Unlike a hydrostream, Allison or other lighter boat that is easier to run more flat to the water with stern lift.
