Question about an '84 Check

I'm looking at an '84 Checkmate. The owner says it has a 4.3 in it. What I can't remembber though is when MerCruiser started using the 4.3 and the Alpha series. Heres a pic the owner sent me of the boat, which will need work. Thanks in advance

Not sure myself, but it shouldn't matter either. You'll likely want to promptly swap that little motor out for a high reving small block right off the bat ;)
