Removal of shelving?

 I wish I could post pics of my issue but the IT Nazis  have stopped me from posting. Regardless my question is this- I have a 84 Checkmate Entertainer. Along the sides of the boat there are what I would call psuedo shelves- the factory glassed in a 1/4 inch thich piece of plywood approx 4-5 inches tall standing vertically to which they mounted drink holders. It runs about 3-4 feet along the floor under the gunall. I believe this was to serve a a place to put chains, oars, ropes, stuff behind so it would accessible- lord knows there is no other storage area on the boat. Anyway do to it being so thin and probably taking beating from the previous Owner, it is structurally unsound neaning the fiberglass is there but the board inside is sheared/broken in several places.

My question is this- can I take this "shelving" out and not effect the structural integrity of the hull? It sure would make installing the new carpeting easier.

Thoughts?

Yes, you could take the verticle runners out. They are not stringers and are only glassed to the top of the floor. Checkmate used them in many boats to separate storage from sliding across the floor. My Pulsare has them also. I will tell you though, they do come in handy. I would replace the the bad one in your boat. It's not that hard to carpet over the runner.

+1 for keeping them.

I find that spot useful for storing 3 or 4 orange life jackets on one side and the same amount of ski vests on the other. The USCG requires the life jackets to be easily accessible and that fits the bill.
