Rev 4 vs. Bravo vs Mirage

OK - I realize these are pretty different props. But I've heard of some good results with the rev 4 on higher power sterndrives.

The good Mr. Buss told me today that rev 4's "turn hard" - like a + 4 pitch mirage (23p rev 4 = 27p mirage).

I hit the limiter on my 23p mirage (with a load). I don't hit it at all on my 25p mirage.

I was thinking a 23p rev 4 - and will still pick one up if I can find one reasonably. But Mr. Buss has me thinking about a 21p.

Anyone know where bravo's fall compared to those two props? I don't think they are as "steep" as the rev's. My new hull seems to sit deep in the water while running so a prop with lift (not sure if I need bow or stern lift) would probably help.

Chris - let me know how your boat turns that 24p - that will be a good data point for me. Like I said - it cruised great but I couldn't see more than 4400 rpm with an average load. Less than that with a full load.

Rev 4's tend to turn +1 inch in pitch over what is stamped on it. A Bravo I tends to act -1 from what is stamped. That is what I have been told by prop gurus.

That's about right. The other factor with the Rev4 is the deeper it runs the steeper it runs. When I lower my motor on the hydraulic plate when cruising the RPMs drop but speed will sometimes increase. It is because with more blade in the water it is increasing the effective pitch. Sometimes guys get the Rev4 on their sterndrive and can't turn it because it is running so deep. Having said that I think the 23 Rev4 would run close to your 25 Mirage. Great prop in my opinion. Good lift, grip and speed.

Mark, that's also the info I was looking for, what pitch are you turning with that big etec? was thinking I need a 24, currently on limiter with my 3.0 looper turning a 24 raker.

Rev4's come in odd pitches only. I run a 25p 5800 rpm at 3" under pad, which is the same as the 26 Raker I had. If I raise the plate to 1" under it will turn 6000 and I am on the limiter.

Engine height is everything with these props. Like Gary experienced, when they are run deep on an I/O they are really stiff.

Mark what flo torq hub kit did you get for the Rev4 to fit the Evinrude gearcase?

Had a chance to try out that 25 Mirage yet????

Not yet, I have the intake manifold off right now doing a swap. Putting on a Weiand Stealth and a 850 Holley and also going to a Mallory unilite distributor. When I get it back together, I will run it first with my 23 so I have something to compare to.

Discovered this past week that 454mag's do have aluminum intakes from the factory. But this is the first time I have ever seen an avs carb bolted to a quara junk intake!

A 23p Rev 4 is about equal to a 25p mirage as far as rpms go.

I've run a 25p Mirage+ and a 23p rev4 on the 24s old setup. Maybe gained a few rpms going to the rev4 from a M+. Its a great prop, but I'll bet its going to be slower than a Mirage... just like it was for me. The handling more than made up for a couple mph loss, imo.

Also, are you mirage props you ran the plus, or non-plus? From what I can remember you ran the older mirage?

835265Q02 will run all Mercury (Flo-torq) props.

I haven't been very impressed at all with the OMC props on these M gearcases. I sold my 26 Raker and 27 Renegade (fine on small block V6 but not on the big blocks) and now have a 25 Rev4 and a 25 Fury.

Thanks Everyone -

I have run both a Mirage and a Mirage +. I didn't see too much difference - I've heard the + has more cup. I JUST picked up a 23p rev. 4 so I'll see how that runs next weekend. The 25p mirage is about right but I'd like a 4 blade to see how that runs. Sounds like I'm in the ballpark.

I had that 24p ron hill 4 blade and loved the way it cruised. Just too slow coming out of the hole - too much pitch for my little stock 502! I think Mr. Buss is turning it well.

So I have some hours on the 23 P Rev 4 now and really like it. Hole shot is better than the 25p mirages. I don't push the handling too hard but it is a little more responsive.

My drive is so deep and I have that sternjack that cavitation is NEVER an issue. I can get on plan at full trim up if I really want to - it's not fast but I don't cavitate one bit -- really weird.

I ran 65gps at 4800rpm with the rev4 with a medium load (4 people, dog, gear, cooler), no bow cover at 80 degrees. We came out of the Torch river, a liberator behind us took off loudly - going right around me, my buddy in his 24' yamaha went after him and I just waited a bit as we stowed some gear. I reeled them in before hitting elk and when it opened up I trimmed out and my buddy and I both passed the liberator then I pulled ahead of my bud. Not as fast as I thought. He had one passenger and said he was running 54gps which I believe. Not bad for a jet boat.

I held it at WOT across most of elk - it was smooth enough that the wife didn't object. It was great fun. I let up a bit and my buddy caught up. The liberator turned off - I'm sure ashamed at a homely snub-nosed jet boat and a family bow rider with people up front blowing by him. Really fun though.

Sorry - off topic there for a minute.

Anyhow the fastest I ran with a 25p mirage was 69.8 with two people, bow cover and about 60 degrees so I'm not losing too much with the rev 4. Kinda sad that the prop testing is done. Maybe I need to try a 26P Bravo for fun??!! I'm also going to mess with the PVS vents and see how it works in "quiet" mode. Will be fun to switch back and forth to get a good comparison of what the vents do on takeoff.

Anyone want a cheap mirage 25p (non-plus) that's about a 6/10? $125 sound right?

Here is what I have found for some comparisons between the Bravo I and Rev 4 (and a Hydromotive) props.

I agree! I see why it hooks up so well. Anyone ever mess with the PVS system on the rev? Doubt frankemotor has silent choice on it though!

Thanks for the pics - cool comparison! Keep us posted on the comparison and let me know if you're unloading that bravo 24 - I'll never be done prop testing!

Little off topic, but.....I had the rev 4 23 pitch out this weekend on my 2400 BRX with a 300 stroker on it and it turned like a ton of bricks!! Couldnt get out of the water, literally took 20 seconds to even start to plane out. It was worse than my tempest plus 25 pitch. I was looking for more hole shot for wake boarding so figured I would try it, yeah not so much. The only other prop i had laying around was a 19 pitch tempest plus.....put that on and now i have a hole shot!!! Just need to dial it in i guess. Gonna try a 23 pitch tempest plus this weekend and see what that does. Any advise on what to do/try next for overall performance boardin and runnin hard on the water? Thanks

Get a 22 or 23 pitch Trophy Plus. The Trophy is a great all around prop.
