Rev 4 vs. Bravo vs Mirage

Yea, I can see why everybody says they turn harder than stamped. I should know more in another week as my friend with a 259 will be getting his back from Crockett and we will test it out compared to his Bravo I.

Let us know how that runs and more about it...

I think I know what route I'm going to go with my prop but would like to hear what people are doing with 259's

I will. He was supposed to have it back from Crockett on Friday.....they called and said that motor was getting water into oil all of a sudden.....WTF. I'll keep y'all posted.

Little off topic, but.....I had the rev 4 23 pitch out this weekend on my 2400 BRX with a 300 stroker on it and it turned like a ton of bricks!! Couldnt get out of the water, literally took 20 seconds to even start to plane out. It was worse than my tempest plus 25 pitch. I was looking for more hole shot for wake boarding so figured I would try it, yeah not so much. The only other prop i had laying around was a 19 pitch tempest plus.....put that on and now i have a hole shot!!! Just need to dial it in i guess. Gonna try a 23 pitch tempest plus this weekend and see what that does. Any advise on what to do/try next for overall performance boardin and runnin hard on the water? Thanks

The Rev4 is a beast of a prop and will struggle out of the hole with a high gear ratio Merc outboards (1.75 and especially 1.62). Those motors might need an extra set of PVS holes.
My Etec has a 1.85 ratio and tons of low end torque. I have 1/2" holes plus PVS holes in mine and the 4 PVS are closed and the thing still jumps onto plane in a couple of seconds. We ski and wakeboard and it will pull a slalom skier up instantly.

RiverRat - yup, get a trophy. They ran GREAT on my starliner. Really the only prop that boat ever liked.

On the PVS holes - do they do anything on a sterndrive? It would work well because the only time I need more holeshot is pulling skiers and the silent choice will be "silent" for that application. I'd think I have a fair bit of exhaust flowing out...

I'll let you guys know in a week or so when I'm back.

Gimme Fuel - what did your buddy have done and roughly what are their prices like? I have the itch to take a boatload of people over 70mph. Headers, ignition, ECU, bump the limiter to 5200. Sound right if I can get them to 65gps now? My motor is still under 200 hours so I don't want to tear it open too far just yet. -- off topic, but what do you think?

Well, he bought the boat with the Crockett +100 hp kit on the MPI 454 and it never performed the way it was advertised. Come to find out the previous owner procharged it and never installed larger injectors. Motor began to run poorly this spring...come to find out 2 cylinders were below 30 psi compression. Beginning of June the boat went to Tyler.....he still is dinking around with it. Supposedly that motor dyno'ed at 484 hp @5050 rpm. I believe the original bill was around $10k. Nothing on the motor is anything exotic. Stainless marine manifolds, different iron heads, tune, cam, larger fuel pump, and thats about it. I am not impressed with his thoroughness and anytime a large Cig would roll into his shop my buddy got bumped. Supposedly it is running now but getting water into the oil. We never had that problem with it before. Who knows what will happen. Tyler doesn't seem to have a good managerial control of his workers either. Depending on who answers the phone over there you will get a different story everytime. If you look on OSO there are either love or hate threads about him (as with any builder probably). I just don't think he is worth the hype. there is nothing super complicated about an MPI motor. I can talk you through any upgrades you want. Bob Madera of Marine Kinetics is also a wealth of knowledge about these motors and I would recommend one of his custom cams.

So i would notice a big difference between the 23 pitch rev 4 that i have and a 23 pitch trophy plus?

Huge difference! The Trophy will spin 3-400 more revs. Probably the right choice for your application. Should pop out of the hole.

Took boat out with a 23 pitch tempest plus, hole shot was pretty good, but couldn't really get to the top end because the water was way to rough for that. My question is a 23 or 24 pitch trophy plus? Is there going to be a huge difference between the two pitches? Thanks

I don't know if there's truth to it but I've read on Scream and Fly that for some reason the 24 Trophy just doesn't work as well as the 23 or 25.

I'll report once i get, but i have a 23 pitch trophy plus coming, so we'll see what happens. I'm usually loaded up with people and pullin something, so hope it works, and dont have to buy something else!!

Alright had the 23 pitch trophy plus out this last weekend and all i can say is PERFECT!! Excellent hole shot, great top end, and held sharp turns at 40-45mph. I'm sure I would get more top end with a 25 pitch, but i can't complain with what i have now. Boat handles much better as well. Defintely the way to go! Thanks for all the advice and help!!

I'm gonna bump this thread and give some more info from my personal experience. A 23 rev 4 only turned 300 more then a 26 bravo did on my boat. I've noticed I get prop burn on my bravo I been running.

With as fast as you like to go, you should put a drive shower on. You wouldn't believe how hot your upper unit gets on a hard run. Plenty of different designs out there and gambit of prices.

Back to the rev 4 vs bravo. Remember, the 23p rev 4 is a 24p in real life. The 26p bravo is really a 25p. That is more of what explains the only slight rpm difference. When using a prop slip calculator, use the real life numbers versus what is stamped for accurate slip calcs. This stamped vs real life pitch has been verified. Bblades will tell you this is the case.

So a 1" pitch change usually nets around a 200 rpm difference, but many factors can change this. So, there is roughly only 1.5" pitch difference between the two when extremely idealized.

GF, the REV4 & Tempest which are twins in their geometry and diameter other than their blade config. they also both run true to their stated pitch more so than the bravo.
The bravos are generally .7 less than the stated pitch, so a 26 bravo is actually 25.3 and a 24 would be 23.3 and so on.
So yes when compared to a bravo the rev4 will be nearly 1 degree taller in pitch than a bravo of the same stated pitch.
Also the rev4 is only 14.625 in diameter and the bravo is 15.250 which may explain some of the increase in rpm on the rev4 over the bravo due to the blade area difference between the two.
