Well i am now the proud owner of a merc xr6 150. Now it's time to figure out how i want to rig it.I'm looking at a hyjaker hydrolic jakplate with a 6" set back. what all am i going to have to do besides new controls.do I need duel cable stering ,solid mounts? Ive never set one up like this. any thoughts? Gus you should have a field day with this being it's a trimate.eh

The XR6 has stiffer mounts than standard. Take a look at yours, make sure they aren't worn. 6" setback is a good place to start. If you have the smaller 'XR6' gearcase, you can run that pretty high as it only has the 4 intake holes on either side of the bullet set down low. A water pressure and water temp guage are essential. If you have the standard gearcase, you'll want to plug the top holes and leave the 4 bottom ones open. Your Merc dealer can get you those plugs, they have a Merc part number 22-16581. You definately want good heavy duty dual ride-guide steering. You also want a new (and only new, not used) 26" Laser II small hub prop if you have the 'XR6' gearcase, and a 27" Laser II large hub prop if you have the standard case. You're wanting around 5800 rpms at WOT for a completely stock XR6. Pushing my 17' closed bow Pulse, I was at approx. 5600 rpms in the summer at 70 mph using the 26" Laser II small hub.
You can expect some high speeds with this boat/motor/prop, so the dual cable steering is a MUST. You should also install a foot throttle and trim/lift switches on the steering wheel. You'll want both hands on the wheel at all times.
With a 2.5 V6 torque on a boat designed for a little 1.8 liter inline, you also want to really make sure your transom is beefed.
If you can't tell whether your XR6 has the 'XR6' lower unit or the standard one, you can put your serial number into the Mercury Parts Express web site and it'll tell you what that motor left the factory as.

Well its the small case so i know which prop to use but how should i beef up the transome? aluminum plate on the inside or do i need to rip it out and replace it? It seems realy solid. I can stand on the motor and jump up and down and it dosnt move a bit. But I want to do this right. I dont want to have to do it over or have somthing let go at 70mph.

The best way to beef it is to box the inside of the transom in with marine plywood sealed with fiberglass. Where you at Gus? this is Gus' territory....
