shredded gears

hey guys last night running on smooth glass beautiful night shredded my lower unit on 80 enchanter johnson 225 v6. took out mt oil plug and had more metal than oil.the hull is cherry new carpet new upolstry trying to slowly restore to mint within a budget of course.so what do i do replace the motor(only 85-90 on compresion test all 6 cyl for years)or rebuid,or what.summers coming up fast

rebuild the lower unit. not as tough as you might think. just did my '74 merc outboard lower. 1st time i've ever worked on a boat motor. The repair manual makes it sound harder than it really is. Take pictures or make drawings as you take things apart, to help you remember how it all goes back together. check ebay for used/new gears and other internals. I got all the gears and bearings. and the prop shaft with clutch dog for 80 bucks, and they looked great for being used. It cost me more for the seal kit that i had to purchase new. As far as engine compression, I can't help you. I don't know what the norm is for that motor. good luck
