(SOLD)FOR SALE 1986 Exciter 18'-6" with 1986 Mercury XR2

Ramifications

Well-known member
I'm putting my 1986 Checkmate Exciter up for sale. I don't need to sell her, but I don't foresee using her much this summer. With a pregnant wife and a new business, time to head out will be few and far between. We went out for a quick ride today after filling up the tank with fresh gas. We came to the realization that it is time for a bigger boat. I'm not in any rush, but plan to have something bigger by next season. Possible trade for something larger

About the boat-

1986 Checkmate Exciter 18'-6" - closed bow version of the Eluder
1986 Mercury XR2 150 - The engine has been completely rebuilt. It went down to Chris Carson Marine in Florida last winter and was totally torn down and rebuilt along with being bored .15 over and getting the heads and reed cage milled and a set of CCM Hi-Performace Reeds installed. She is setup to run on 93 octane gas and premix of 50:1. The lower unit is a 1.87:1 ratio with a low water pickup and torque tab and spinning a 25p Tempest Plus.
I completely redid the entire boat last winter, so basically everything on the boat is just over a year old.
10" CMC Hydro jack plate
TH marine transom plates
All new interior - Checkmate front bucket seats on aluminum swivel bases and backset built from PVC sheet goods and covered to match front seats
Kenwood stereo with 4 speakers, one 10" sub and amp
Eddie Marine accessories in Chrome finish - Grab bar, fuel fill, 6 cup holders, rigging tubes, fuel vent, bezels etc
Two batteries with selector switch
32 Gallon gas tank with all new seals and hoses
Racor Fuel filter
Hydro Steering
All new wiring, fuse panel and switches
White face with chrome bezel Faria guages
Everything sits on a 1987 Calkin Trailer with new tires, wiring and lights
She will also come with a waterproof full boat cover

Best speed I have seen is just a touch over 68 mph per GPS. She will run all day on 32 gals. I have run over 100 miles and still had a 5-6 gals left.

Asking price - don't know $7,500??? I have over 13k invested into the boat...

Make me an offer

Any serious buyer who takes the time to read through your restoration thread shouldn't have an issue with your asking price. I've seen many boats in desperate need of a full restoration listed for close to this.

Good luck Ram :thumb:

I have to say that having been in this boat, I honestly wish I had the money spare to take it off Rams hands.
It's an amazing restore that performs as good as it looks.

It's a keeper for someone that wants a sub 20' Checkmate.

Thank you for the kind words guys:bigthumb:

It's not so much the babies as it is the wife. She doesn't like getting bounced around and now that she is carrying a baby, it didn't go so well. We ended up cutting the trip short, but after dropping her at the dock she let me go out and do my thing for 15-20 mins. As for the soul... Maybe a little, but there is definitely a lot of blood, sweat and tears in there:o

She speaky da truth!

If you don't need to sell it, then continue to enjoy it - even if it's simply a few hours out on your own this summer from time to time when you need that break from the job or the family (I get that).

Boats are like potato chips, no one can have just one. :)

Kris - one here, one in Ireland.
Sim - one and one on the way
Me - one and one under my Dad's care.

You work hard and a quick blast on your boat is a great stress reliever. Maybe get something more mundane and family oriented for days with them and keep your hot rod for you and sometimes the kids as they get older?

John, are you sure you haven't got potato chips and boats confused with illegitimate children?
Sounds awfully similar.

Spencer you cant sell that beautiful boat. You will regret it down the road. That thing is sweet. Is that a new Checkmate built interior. I would like similar front seats instead of my barrel seats. Good luck.

Thank you for the compliments! The front seats are the new Checkmate factory seats, which I bought off Wildman. I made up a new backseat with Azek sheet goods and had it and the side bolsters done to match the new front seats. I think it came out really nice!

I was just looking around and I think I may have found my next boat... pending a test ride in that hull style from a kind forum member:thumb:

You need to pull this off of th market before i end up single for trying to trade you the pulse for it. I know you mentioned it awhile back but now that i have a bigger boat for the bigger water i would love to have this hull for a lake/river boat!!!

Nice boat! Nice restore!

Now you got me thinking it's time for me to get a second boat and since we boat on the same water.... How well would this boat / setup do pulling kids (12-14 year old kids) on a tube?

Thank you:cheers:

It isn't currently setup for tubing/skiing, but with the right prop and the addition of a pylon, it should do fine. I'll be out on Sunday if you want to take a test ride:bigthumb:

Spence, your soul lies somewhere within that thing. Have you considered installing a baby seat?

It's hard to let go of something you put your blood, sweat, tears, and "soul" into. At least it is for me.
Even if you lay low for a couple years, at least it's there for a break now and then. It is a beautiful boat and I have seen it up close.
