SS prop vs. aluminum

Hi guys, anyone out there know how much difference there is between a stainless prop vs. aluminum prop. Does it affect performance or is the stainless just for better wear? Also where do I look for the pitch numbers on my my S.S. prop?

The pitch measurement on my prop is near where the nut goes but it may also be on the other end of the hub. I've hit rocks with aluminum props and broken the props. I've hit rocks with ss props and bent the ss props.

SS props are stronger. Aluminum props are more forgiving to your drive if you hit something. On some applications an aluminum prop will give you a better hole shot because they will flex under a load where SS is solid. Aluminum props are considerably less expensive. Aluminum props are not cost effective to repair if damaged. SS props are available in wider range of blade designs...
Which is better ? It depends on your application and what you expect to get out of it
For general use aluminum may be the best but for performance SS is the only way to go

I disagree on the cost of aluminum repair. I sheared off one entire blade and bent another nearly in a circle. Total cost of two new blades weilded and shaped, prop balanced? $104cdn. Less then half of a new prop.

On Goldenlake, there are more shoals then weeds, SS props are an expensive undertaking. It is an average that for ever 4 years of life, a prop will need a rebuild. Its so common, that we have a guy who runs a winter prop rebuild program, and averages 100 props a year.

Been on the lake my whole 34 years, and still to this day I find rocks, shoals I did not know of. Infact, I was in almost 20feet of water when I hit the small shoal, the entire rest of the shore was sand. Luckily I was only at idle speed.

I do agree on performance statement, SS does get the job done.

Thanks for your insight and experience guys. I'm amazed that a whole prop blade could be sheared off. I always thought that there was a clutch or shear pin to prevent that.
