starflite set up ?

I have a 89 starflite with a 24" transom for xl shaft's.
What do you think about putting a big 4-stroke o/b
l shaft 20" on the transom with no jackplate?
The propshaft is 4" below the pad, when I put the engine in the first hole.Is it to high for good allround set up?

The propshaft will be too high for that rig if you go to a 20" shaft motor. For all around use, you'll need to keep the propshaft 4" to 3" below the pad in my experience.

The propshaft is 4-4,5" below the pat when I put the motor at deepest position on the transom. The starflite had a 6" set back in the hull.
That's good for higher prop position?
I must order a motor in this time, but I would not take a xl-shaft with jackplate.
What can I do?

I guess I should ask a couple of questions:

Is it the 25" shaft motor that puts your propshaft 4" below the pad, or did you have a 20" shaft motor on the transom and measured the propshaft at 4" below the pad?

Are you measuring the bottom of the boat to the propshaft, or are you measuring the bottom of the built-in setback to determine how far the propshaft is below the pad? Don't measure from the bottom of the transom, you have to measure from the bottom of the V-Pad (the lowest point of your hull).

I'd get the 20" shaft motor but I'd also spend a couple hundred more and mount it on a jackplate. At least then you could dial in your height and the extra setback will only help. Contact Kip Combs at the factory I'm sure he can tell you exactly what will work. They didn't make too many of the 24's.

Hi JW
It is the 20" shaft motor that put the propshaft at
4-4,5" below the V-pad.(the lowest point of the hull)

Hi Mark
I have a couple of problems with the hydr. steering,
when I put a jackplate on the transom. The steering
has not enough freeplay when I take the 20" shaft motor.

OK Hubert, no problem then. I'm thinking you really have a 20" transom anyway! Go for the 4-Stroke, the Checkmate can handle the weight no problem.

Thanks guys
My starflite has the same hull as fnshrmasters
old boat. Hope I have good hole shot with this set up and the big motor at the back.

From what I've read, your hole-shot will probably be worse with a 4-stroke outboard compared to the same horsepower 2-stroke, unless you're spending the big bucks and getting a supercharged Verado.

I need my boat for skiing and cruising. Top speed is not all.
Honda is a popular motor at my area with many small lakes and rivers. I have tested a 225 Honda on a 21 footer, 1600 lbs. appr. It is nice. The 2100 Pulsar goes 62 mph with the Honda. Verado ? Nobody has a Verado in Germany.
I can't tested. I must take the cat in the bag.

It actually sounds like you do have a 24" transom. Have you measured it? Bottom of pad to top of transom lip. The standard transom is 22". If it is 24" I still think you should send Kip a Personal Message and ask him how they set up the 24's.

Hi Mark
I have measured it is a 24" transom
I send Kip a PM with the hullnumber and I hope
I can take the l-shaft.
Thanks for help

checki...
I have fnshrmaster's old 1992 Starflight... It has a 200XRi 20" motor on a CMC jack plate. I have never measured the transom... but sure looks about 20" to me... Are you measuring to the transom notch or all the way to the bottom of the "V"...??? I can measure mine the next time I go to the storage garage.

I am in the process of re-rigging it with more set-back (10" CMC hyd.) and a 300 Promax (20" mid). I like the newer 4-strokes...but HEAVY! The honda's are awesome... the yamaha's and older mercs are the SAME powerheads. The new Verado's are over-sized, over-weight PIGS for the power they put out!!! If the honda's are common in your area (availability & service)... get one... you won't be disappointed!

FYI: I have never seen ANY Starflights that use a 25" motor!

Call Kip at Checkmate... Jim.

Hi Jim
I have measured the transom 24" all the way to the V-pad.
At the starflite history on this forum, Kip said
he had 2 hull molds 20" transom and 24" for xl- shafts and the rear of the deck was different.
We have the different deck and a little stepp at the rear of the bottom.
I am relieved you have also a 20" motor.
What do you think is a good allround fixed propshaft hight with 6" standard set back at the hull.
Thanks for reply it is very helpful.
Your black starflite is very nice.

Hubert... If you have any photos, send them to me... I'd like to compare your transom with mine! I'll have to go measure it or compare to my photos. My direct e-mail is: jrumon@yahoo.com

Finding the correct motor height is more of a trial & error thing... Depends on hull design, prop, weight, motor set-back, etc. etc. With that in mind, I would HIGHLY recommend a JACK PLATE!!! Go either either a mechanical or hydrolic unit. That way you can easily "fine tune" the motor height to your needs...QUICKLY & EASILY!!! I would say the 20" motor would be fine on a jack plate (the plates usually give you 5"-6" inches of height movement up & down). Jim.

Jrumon does not have the same transom as you. The standard Starflite transom is 22"(18" to the notch, 4" more to the bottom of Vee. I measured it just the other day as I was mounting a jackplate) even though it is built for a 20" shaft motor. This allows the motor to run higher out of the water. Personally I think another 2" will cause the prop to ventilate if you don't also add some setback with a jackplate.
Mark

Thanks Mark...

My boat isn't where I can measure it... so you saved me a trip! I would still recommend a 20" motor on a jack plate... that way it can be lowered fully for down... and raised as needed from there.

I agree, a 25" shaft motor is going to hang too low unless you mount it right at the top and a 20" I'm sure will be too high. Checki, is there any way to rig the steering so you can go with a 20" and a jackplate?

Hi Guys
From the top of the transomplate to the top of the step
17" + 7" down to the v-pad.
Today I have call with a friend of mine , he had a
85 starflite 24" with a 225 Suzuki 2 stroke 20" fixed at the second hole. he said it was ok, but the Suzi prop was not the best. A pic comes next week.Think I order a 20" Honda and tested . A jackplate is the last chance.

PS: How many different starflite hulls had checkmate built?

Thanks guys you are great
