starflte speeds w/ 200hp.

ross

Well-known member
so i have been wondering who on this board has the fastest STOCK starflite with a STOCK 200hp motor......

what setup do you guys have????
lets see some pics:D

i have seen that thread a few times. i was wanting to see if any of those numbers have changed with setup, or if there was any new members on here since that thread was put together that could tell us what they had going for them......

I've been watching for that too. Haven't seen anything interesting lately. I messed with mine constantly and never hit 67 again. Best I could get was 66 on a good day and 64 - 65 is typical.
Even the guys with the 225's typically run only 70. Every once in a while someone posts and says they got 75 or 76 with there Starflite. Read this one. http://checkmate-boats.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15801 I don't really get it.

i must have missed that thread. thanks or sharing:bigthumb:
i guess i don't get how one guy on here says he can get low 70's all the time and name his setup and the next guy will also list his setup and be running 60.
anyway i was just looking to see if i had mine dialed in or if i should keep playing with it???????

I think the biggest thing with these 200's is wheather its a 2.4,2.5, or 3.0. The bigger 200's have the advantage.

this is going to sound really stupid but.....
what is the difference in HP OUTPUT between these motors? 2.4, 2.5, and 3.0liter all of the same hp??? is it just torque that makes the diference?
that does sound dumb but i guess i have never thought about it:popcorn:

Not that dumb. Merc did make 200 HP motors in 2.4, 2.5 and 3.1. The bigger motors clearly had more low end torque as you would expect from more displacement. On the other hand the HP is rated at WOT so theoretically they should all run the same at WOT. However some motors put out more HP on the dyno than the sticker on the cowl. Check this thread out from S&F http://forums.screamandfly.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157576&highlight=200+dyno
The difference between a 2.5 and 3.1 I bet is only 10 HP which is only a couple of MPH.

VERY INTERESTING!!! i guess if you ask a question on this site you learn:cheers: thanks for the info! and as far as the rest of the starflites that are owned on this site.......i must be way off with my setup or the owners are either very optimistic or they are watching the lyometer:poke: thanks again mark!:thumb:

Don't forget the weight

The 2.4 and 2.5 are considerly lighter than the 3.1 @ 505 lbs. the stern weight makes a big difference on how most cm's perfrom.

I have to say that it is true about the stern wait. When I got my Starflight it had a 1988 2.5 225hp. Motor on it. The boat did not need as much speed to run on top of the water and it seemed to get on plane quickly. I was running a 24p small hub chopper at the time. 4,000 rpm. Out of the hole. Top speed was 61 mph. with me in it. Now I did not get to run this motor very long so I did not get to play around with the setup. Unfortunately this motor only lasted one weekend and through burned up. I now have a 1996 3.0 225 carb motor. Same prop 5,200 rpm out of the hole but because of the weight on the back the hole shot was the same if not worse right at first. But with help from the people on this sight I now have my motor set at the right height and I am running a 23p Trophy Plus prop with all the vent plugs out and I have 3,900rpm. Out of the hole and it pulls hard and is up to speed in no time. Top end GPS. Is a solid 69 almost 70 but I have never gotten it to 70 But to tell the truth at that speed the boat is very light and you have to drive it or you will be in trouble.

1988 Starflight with 1996 Mercury 225hp. 3 ¾ below the V with 23p Trophy Plus at 5900rpm WOT. 69+mph.

I think most of the numbers are from newer engines. :thumb:

I think you are right. The newer engines are a little lighter and run at a higher rpm... At leased the two strokes are anyway. And with more set back ability and low water pickups allowing for higher motor heights’ more speed is achievable. I may still move some stuff around in my boat for better weight distribution and maybe try a 24p Trophy to bring my rpm down a little. More or less for better economy while cru zing and maybe hit that 70mph mark. Maybe next summer I will get to see an 80mph Starflight in my travels. Haven’t seen one yet. There is only one other in my area and he thought his went about 75mph. That is what the boat Speedo told him anyway but I seem to find him in the rear view most of the time. Older Yamaha 225 same boat just a 1989 Starflight. This is the boat I was trying to keep up with at first and couldn’t until I got some help here with my setup so it makes all the difference in the world. You never know what will help until you try all boats are different.

This is just my experience, but the old saying "there is no replacement for displacement" holds so true for two strokes.

Example 1- 2.4 245+ HP netted mid to upper 60s on my Starliner, the new owner is seeing mid to upper 60's with a 3.0 225. I was maybe 1 or 2MPH faster, but I also spent a lot of $$$ for the 1 or 2 MPH...lol

Example 2- 2.5 280ROS on my Pulsare. Bumped Rev Limiter (8800) After Market Reeds, Etc. had to be pushing 280-290 HP. I never played with the set-up, but never got over the 80mph mark. 3.2L 300XS with the same "Virgin" set-up netted 84MPH.

Now days when you talk about how much power you are pushing on these hulls, first ask HP, then ask Liters. Checkmates are not exactly the lightest hulls around and the new generation, bigger displacement motors make a huge difference in performance.

Sorry if this is :offtopic:, but I thought it was relevant to the conversation.

PLEASE EXPLAIN....... displacement is displacement.......

HORSE POWER IS HORSE POWER, new or old a 2 stroke mota vs 2 stroke mota
i don't care the age- if the compression is right it doesn't matter.

i raced sleds for a few years and smoked alot of brand new sleds with a used one that had been takin care of very well.......it's all in the set-up:eyecrazy:

i wish someone on here w/ a STOCK 200 would post a speed and there set-up!!!!! i don't think i am off at all.:poke: just was wondering!

i also know that matt and a few others(merc245) are running 245hp mercs and are not that far ahead of me:o

not trying to be rude but.......
