Steering Cable Source?

groundloop

Active member
My '79 Eluder has the dual Ride-Guide rack and pinion steering system. Anyone know of a source of steering cables for these?

thanks

You can't get them from the factory anyore. Mercury stopped making Ride_Guide cables etc a few years ago. You will have a hardc time finding them unless some obscure dealer has them in stock.

Let me know what find. I am a bit leary about adding a Jack Plate as I dont really have much slack in my cables. A new Hydraulic set up is not in the budget.

Is there anymore numbers ?
See if you can Identify your system from this link, http://www.teleflex.ru/upload/files/catalog/msru/Steering%20Identification%20Guide.pdf
I can check more when I get to the shop

I didn't see any more numbers, I can look again tonight. That number was stamped into the steel part that connects to the rack.

My steering system is down near the bottom in that link, on page 20 it's the third one under the heading "Competitive Brand Rack & Pinion Steering Systems" . It's the Mercury Ride Guide with square racks. I'm pretty sure most of the older Checkmates used this system, I've seen photos of other rebuild projects that had this same dual rack system.

Yes I'm sure I can get the right cable I'm just try to get the right ID on what you have.
The number should be on the cable casing. It's hard to find sometimes if it's still on the boat.
If not measure it end to rack, the length makes a difference in price.

End of cable to end of rack

That length is 14 ft. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to get a cable that's 1 ft longer, since the previous owner added a 6" jack plate and I'm pretty sure this is the original cable that came on the boat.

Here's a photo of the rack end of the cables (rack is removed, obviously)

Here's a closup of where the cable goes into the rack housing.

Here's the one and only marking on the cable - "M2838" (hard to read because of the flash).

And the engine end (the same as pretty much any outboard steering cable, right?).

Mercury Ride-Guide rack system cables WERE, and I repeat WERE, part # 11111A__
The last two digits after the A were the length. You may be able to find this number on the black sheath of the cable. Example 11111A17 is a 17' cable.

Good luck finding one, I suspect you'll be going to hydraulic steering.

I believe that link that MK sent is saying that Teleflex has an equivalent replacement. We'll see.

Not gonna' happen, not for what those things cost. I've seen brand new dual cable systems for less than half what hydraulic systems cost.

Yes Teleflex as the replacement. That's why I sent you a current telleflex chart.
You have gave me enough info. a foot longer can not hurt you can always bury the extra cable somewhere if any. I will check tomorrow.

When I bought the new cables for my twin rack system, the numbers were in white on the black sheath about 15 inches from the engine end. Hope this helps!

Well I could be wrong. Morse may have a replacment cable....Morse cable # 304860.

That would be great if it did and was as high of quality as the ride-guide.....
