Thermostat Temperature

I have a 1990 senator 20' with a 351 ford omc, had some trouble with overheating last summer. I installed a stock 160 thermostat and my temp came down to 160-180. This still seems hot to me, would there be any benefit to a 140 thermostat? I would think cooler the better . . . right?

Don't know Fords but why do you think 160 is too hot. If stat is a 160 it will control to 160 if the rest of the cooling system is functioning properly. Motors do need some temperature in them so that condensation does not form or stay in the motor oil and so the parts like pistons expand to a proper shape. Water boils at 100 so anything above that should be OK. But also most motors are engineered to run at a normal operation temp in the area of 160-180 or so. Newer car engines are an exception now as they are designed to run hotter for better fuel consumption and lower emissions.
