Throttle adjustment????

Hey, shipmates... I have an old 1972 140hp Mercury 6 cyc engine, that seems to run ok. I just purchased it with an 1972 MX-16. I'm new to boating, and was wondering if anyone could give any suggestion on routine maintance. Also, right as I start to engage the throttle the engine stalls, but if i just gun it, it fine. Any Ideas? Also when up to speed, if I let go of the wheel, it likes to veer hard to the right. Any Ideas? Thanks, Bruce

If your carbs are nice and clean and everything else is good just adjust your idle. should be around 800rpm in gear it may take a little fiddling around to get all three carbs in sync. As for your pulling to the right you should have a trim tab just behind your prop under the cav plate. If not get one. Adjust it so when your going it takes most of the torque off the steering, if you have power trim some people set them so when there running at operating trim height the steering torque is non existant. Hope this get you started there's a wealth of knowledge here.

You need to check out the inline 6 newsgroup.

Some of the best inline 6 guys in the country are on there. I can email you a 2 page Link, Sync and Timing procedure. These motors are a little sensitive to timing, especially some of the earlier 70's 140 motors I think. Make sure you time it right and you may save yourself some serious headaches.

One more thing. As stated before sync. carbs and timing, then on just about any engine I work on I set idle speed with the boat in the water. I still think its the best way. This is especially the way I like to set the 2+2 motors.
