tilt and trim

trim is the power trim. The hydraulic pump on the motor that raises it up and down. i beleive that tilt up/down is the same thing. I know that there are trim tabs that basicaly produce the same effect on the hull as power trim, but i dont think that's what you have.

Often on outboard controls the power trim/tilt functions are controled by the same button. Sterndrives may have different buttons for trim and tilt. Sterndrives also have a limit switch that prevents them from trimming too much and damaging the bell housing where the u-joints are.

Trim Tabs offer more negative trim and almost no positive trim. They also allow you to trim the boat from side to side to help balance the weight in the boat. They will also help a boat plane faster. Big offshore performance boats have them as well as cruisers. Usually don't see them on boats shorter than 22 feet.
