Hope I am not starting a debate here. What model of older mates 70's and 80's had the highest top speed with rated horse power?

1979 TRIMATE 2 115 MERC.

Bummer, just had to throw that "rated HP" in the mix.

I have a freind with a 1980 20' Enchanter, He's running 70 with an Evinrude 235.
It's rated for 215hp

I use to have an 87 Starflight with a 200 Merc which was hopped up slightly, maybe 210 hp and it would run 67-69 mph.

my old starflite 21 1989, 200 xri 5" set back 23 tempest plus 69/71 on the gps

Sake From HOLLAND

F150GT, I would count that as being at rated horsepower since my '83 is rated for 235hp (according to the replacement capacity plate I got from Checkmate).

Those rated capacity plates never seem to have much consistancy, they change from year to year.
I think those old Evinrudes were rated at the flywheel, so the 235 is pretty close to a newer 200.
What kind of speeds are you getting out of yours?

My Pulse 185 with a 175 efi merc ran 70 on radar with a minor mod, (a 200 hp exhaust tuner) which was good for about 10 horses which put it at 185 hp which is the rated max.

Unfortunately I'm in the middle of replacing the stringers & floor from the front seat back (I puting in floor and pouring foam now), so it didn't get out this year (I actually hadn't had the boat very long when I found this). I know the current prop is less than ideal, but hopefully next year I can take it out with the gps and get some good nos.

My 84 enchanter runs 74.8 gps with two people and on dead calm water, With the speedo reading about 76, on rough water the speedo reads passed 80

, how true it is I don't know.I run a 2004 Evinrude H.O..

My '73 mx-15 has an old johnson 135 on it and it hit 50 on gps this summer but I think there is something wrong with the engine. I am currently working on it with a friend who is a mechanic so maybe this summer will be even faster. At least I can beat a bayliner! :-P

hobbies this expensive and addictive should be illeagle

I have 1986 Starflite with a 1985 Johnson 300hp. I run a 6" CMC jackplate and 29pitch Matco paddle prop. It has been gunned at 88mph with half tank of gas, calm conditions and 2 persons on board. I goes a bit faster with about 6-8" of chop. Sure seems to surprise most of the highly modified Bajas, Donzis and Formulas here on Lake Champlain.
Cheers,
Rob

Well,
After growing up with a 14' Starcraft and a 45hp Merc(1962) with a top speed of 27mph speedo
(GPS did not exist!!) breaking the 50mph barrier would be great!!
Seems slow compared to the rest!!
I'm hoping for that this Summer.
Got 46mph last Summer with aluminum prop 19P.
Picked up a Michigan Wheel Turbo Stainless 13 1/4 X 22 from Bakedgoods.

85 Predictor with 115 Merc

85predictor,Let me know how that 13 1/4 X 22 prop works out this spring. If you can turn it fast enough(recommended rpm's) you should hit 50 or slightly more.I ran 50 after I put the new stator on but I don't know what pitch prop I have.I was turning 6000rpm at times with it trimmed up but I think my prop is less than 22 but thats a guess. It ran a lot quicker with the new stator.

I did have an 83 Entertainer a few years ago with a 2.6XP engine on it and it ran a hair over 70 with two people in the boat.I bought it from Kunkel's so you know it had to be fast.Don't know I would want to run much faster than that in that size boat.

Hoser, Have you done any major modifications to the motor or hull? I read numerous post on this site and others regarding modified engines, various amounts of setback and different props for Starflights. You’re the first to get one out of the seventies and into the eighties, "upper eighties." Anyone have a Matco prop for sale? I have 89 Starflight, 91 2.4 Merc. zero setback at 67-MPH. I’m adding 10” of setback and a 25” Michigan Ballistic prop, raising the compression and hoping to hit 73.
