trim gauge

I have just bought a 1996 convinvor 242 with a 454 mag mpi. The trim gauge worked the first few times out then decided to jump around. Is there a simple answer as to where I can look to solve this? I noticed a trim sensor gauge on the starbord side of the outdrive, is this where the problem stems from? If anyone has any input I would sure appreciatte it.

Thank You

You do have sensors in both drive sides.
(Trim & Til Sensors)

If it doesn't shows any movement at all on the trim gauge and the drive still works up and down, it may have the wires cutted.

Sometimes the trim sensor cable clamp jumps out of the place just near back the drive bellows, and when you trim the drive all way up it just cut the wires.

It may be necessary to replace it, the kit runs about 70usd and it will take some patience do mount it (time consuming). The included instructions are self explanatory... just an advice get someones help for the final ajustment to set the sensor in the right position while you trim inside the boat (turn ignition key on.

The only thing that I am not shure now, is if you need to take the drive out, as well as the bell housing in order to pass the cables thru the transom assy.

Hope it helps

Also check the ground wire. Mine stopped working and I started taking apart the gauge and the sensor. Turned out the motor bracket wasn't grounded. The ground wire from the mid section had broken. Replaced the wire and away she went.
