Trim tab problems

New member
I just bought a 1996 242 Convincor (385 HP). I noticed that it didn't seem to be trimming up as it should be when trying to run at high speeds. I looked at the trim tab resoiver and noticed it was empty, so I added some. Then I played with the tabs while the boat was on my shore station and realized there was a leak in one of the lines on the external side of the boat. I was wondering if these commonly go bad and are easy to change or difficult. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciatted.

Thanks

Jason

First things first.. Your trim tabs are not there to trim the boat up while running high speeds. They are there to either level off the boat if you have an uneven load or if you need to keep the bow down while running in rough water, you can equally lower them. To run your highest speed , you need to tab up and trim the drive up.
If your tabs are stock, they are most likely Insta-Trim tabs. Those hoses can blow off or just plain leak. You can replace the hose with any type of automotive power steering return line hose. It is an easy job to handle.

Thank You,

I wasn't trying to trim out the boat with the tabs, I had the tabs trim all the way up but noticed that the boat didn't seem to trim up as it did when I bought it, a whole two days prior, I examined the trim tab and noticed a leaking line. I was then able to push the trim tab down with virtually very little resistance, I didn't think that was normal, but was not quite sure? I know the tabs are made by boat leveler company, but don't know the specific model name. Thank You for your help vinny.

400 psi hose, insta-trim is in stlouis near me, i just had a hose blow out and bought 6 feet of it! 2$ or 3$ per ft, make sure its pressure hose if you buy elsewhere, the hose is held on by a slip over type compression fitting, use plyers and a screwdriver! its a quick fix!!
