twins vs. single

Looking to buy an outboard convincor.. 25' preferably. I wanted a single due to the astronomical prices of fuel until I spoke to a mechanic who was selling me that a 25 convincor would burn more fuel witha single then with twins. At first I laughed thinking 12 cylinders instead of 6. His argument was that a 25' is a heavy boat and with a single 250 its a dog and plows eating eating gas. With twins he said you can get on plane effortlessly and cruise @ 40 mph with the throttles half way down. Seamed like a good argument but I would still bet on tyhe single. Looking for your feedback....

I've had several boats that have had a single and also twins. Twins will ALWAYS burn more. I sell Liberator tunnels. The 21ft with a 300x gets 3 mpg. My personal 21 Liberator has twin 260's, and gets 1.5 - 1.75 mpg. They both run over 100mph

If your worried about how much gas it will use get a sail boat ,remember there is no replacement for displacement gotta love horsepower

One of my boat magazines did a test on singles vs twins vs triples. The multi-engine boats did BETTER on fuel economy MOST of the time. Just like the sales man said, you will run multi engines with less stress than a single.

The trick is:

You have to compare mph versus mph. At 50 with a single wide open, you'll use more fuel than twins at 50 (which are capable of 65+). Likewise, a pair of twins at 65 will burn more than triples at 65.

Wide open, of course the multis use more fuel, BUT at higher speeds.
