VHF Radio Questions

Member
I searched the forum but didn't see many posts about current VHF radios and what most people were using. I am currently looking at a Standard Horizon GX1700 Explorer GPS VHF Radio but I am unfamiliar with the brand. I can pick one up for $159 after rebate (which seems like a pretty good price for radio with GPS) but I don't know much about them. Anyone have any experience with either the radio or manufacturer? Any alternatives that are a better deal?

Yes Please let me know. My radio is OEM from 1988. I think its time for an upgrade and I dont know to much about radios

Thanks

I don't know much either but I guess i am going to learn fast. The good news is that the rebate lasts until 7/31. If it works well, I will let you know.

Received the Radio

I received the radio yesterday (it was just like Christmas). It is very impressive looking. I didn't realize that it could mount flush in the dash or with its brackets on top of the console. It appears that the only drawback for flush mounting would be the built in GPS antenna might not get a good signal and require me to purchase another one, or hook it to a chart plotter (not in the budget yet!). I would like to hear where most people mount their radios. I have not purchased an antenna yet but I am looking at a Shakespeare 5101. Is anyone familiar with this model? Any suggestions on alternatives? I am also at a loss as to where I should mount the antenna. I don't want it in the way, it must be at least 3 feet from the radio, and not near any large metal objects (I guess like the engine?). That doesn't leave a lot of options on a Checkmate! I would love to hear your feedback.

When I had my 22' Sylvan, I used the Shakespeare antenna. The whole boat was a large metal object..... :D
