Gel coat repair

JT Patroni

Well-known member
I am in the process of doing a regelcoat of the bottom of my Starflite.
When I first got the boat the bottom was badly damaged in several
places by missing trailer rollers. For a quick repair I used thickened
epoxy with white pigment. Now that I am redoing the gelcoat I have
removed the epoxy. The question I have, is it advisable to mix chopped up glass fibers to the polyester resin and cabo-sil mixture to fill the damaged areas and fair the bottom before applying any gelcoat?

That will work, but there are allready pre-mixed glass fillers that can be used.

Thanks!

Having a second opinion is a big help. Since I already have the resin,
a large amount of CSM and a 10lb bag of Cabo-Sil I will use that.
The deepest gouge was slightly into the first glass layer so it was only
about 1/16" deep. I am probably doing overkill but it can't hurt
anything but time and we still have some cold weather in front of us.

I've done some touchup gelcoat work on my Pulsare using a neutral gelcoat paste with black pigment....sand.....polish...sand.....polish...;)

On Saturday 03/06/10 I finished all the damaged areas on the hull and
got it ready for gelcoat.

Today Sunday, I rolled on 3 coats. The first 2 coats were with a medium nap roller for high deposit and the third with a smooth nap roller to help fill in the heavy orange peel. Used 1-1/2 gallons so I can get a nice smooth finish. Applied the second and third coats at 3 hour intervals so they bond well to each other. After the third coat the orange peel is quite small. It
will make sanding easier (I hope).

Any reccommendations on how long I should wait before starting the sanding?

Jim
