540 EFI Build-up Thread

I feel like Santa leaves you IOU notes every year. Checks in the mail. Parts shipped yesterday. I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a cheeseburger today. And so on and so on..:brickwall:

Welcome to my life man! Thats due to the eternal black cloud that follows me around. Most people wonder why i still try to build stuff.....haha. its like this on most projects i attempt haha.

Haha stick with it and come to poker run! It's going to be a runner!

I will say Bob Madera and Alex Haxby have been fantastic trying to get me parts and get this motor up and going but even though Holley has the best system on the market, I am not impressed by their supplier and inventory issues and shipping department. Not only was the ECM's on backorder for a month and a half, there are harness and injector shortages as well. No set of 8 injectors available so we had to get individual packaged ones and only 48 lbs/hr rate at that. All out of 60 lb/hr injectors so it looks like they will be seeing some increased pressures. Alex thinks they will be enough and if not, he will exchange/credit me for them. None the less, I have everything to get running....I think.

One issue I spotted right away last night was the crank trigger mounting. I am going to have to do some fancy thinking there. It bolts in the same holes as the sea pump bracket or the alternator/sea pump tensioner brackets (v-belt setup). I will get more pics tonight as I was only able to work on it for about a half hour last night due to social obligations (It was a killer having to leave!).

Sucks to hear about all of the troubles you keep running into but im glad you are finally getting stuff in to put the beast together!! Cant wait to see and hear this beast on the water!!

Well, I got the main harness installed last night, most of the sensors installed also. I did figure out a solution for the crank sensor bracket interference issues. I just need to go get some steel from home depot to make a new tensioner bracket. Unfortunately, it appears that I received a crank sensor kit but with no crank sensor!!!!!:brickwall: And to top it off, my Accell throttle body uses a Ford style Throttle Position Sensor not GM. Luckily the local parts store actually had the Accell TPS unit in their warehouse and it will be here this morning. I looked at a replacement ford model which would have worked but had a screwey plug on it I couldn't get a pigtail to splice into my harnes for it whereas the Accell unit uses a standard weatherpak connector which the store had a pigtail for so I can modify my harness easily to accept it. The computer has inputs for knock sensor, fuel pressure, and oil pressure senders but they were not included in the kit. I really want to have a knock sensor and oil pressure sensor integrated in the system for safety. I sent an email to Alex asking him about them and to see if standard GM senders would fit.

Here is a pic of the crank sensor bracket. It is very beefy and I will use the spare two holes to attach my alternator and sea pump tensioner brackets.

Injectors are in and wired:

You can see that I am keeping most of the wiring behind and under the plenum for vanity sake. I want it to be CLEAN. Next year I will get a regular oil pump drive versus my old distributor and that will tidy things up a bit. I am no longer going to use it for a sequential cam sensor because going full sequential will not gain any power over batch fire according to Alex and isn't worth the trouble. I was able to pull my 1" carb spacer off and drill & tap a larger hole for the intake air sensor. Also, the MAP sensor is remote mounted and accepts a 1/4" vacuum tube so it is attached to the intake with Velcro and is attached by tubing to a small hose barb. Easy solutions for EFI retrofitting.

Look how clean the front of the intake looks. Who says EFI can't look dead sexy! Eat yer heart out carb fanatics.....

lookin awesome Ron.....

There's actually light at the end of the tunnel now ----- your patience, hard work, and dedication is gonna pay back in spades very soon ;)

they make the TPS ford style that has the GM connector, we run one, also the knock sensors are std GM one I believe....
Yea, they are available. I can have this accell unit today and just change over to a std weatherpac connector then use the pigtail I cut off to make an adapter to waetherpac if I ever go back to a gm style.

Yea, I believe you are correct on knock sensors. I just need to figure out an application to pull one from and whether it is the one wire or three wire style.

Wow!
Havent been on here for a few days and just looked at this thread.
Very impressive to say the least, keep up the good work Ron, looks great.
