Too superstitious? "opinion"!

I guess you might consider me a little superstitious, however I can't say I'm over the top superstitious.
I never would let the number 13 get put on any of my race cars, I never let any digital volume settings be at the number 13, I'm concerned when a black cat passes in front of me, I did break a mirror once and worried a little, .... and yes I think one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks never won a superbowl because of his jersey number {sorry Mr Marino}, but I digress....
So, here I am with this problem that many may consider silly and maybe even stupid, however, It is what it is.
I need to change the name on my Checkmate,-- since basically completing the restore on the Vision a few weeks back she will never sit back in salt water again while I own it. There's the rub, its name "A-Salt Weapon", -- it just doesn't seem right to have that name on a lake boat.
Having a few boats in the past, I've always been afraid to change any names even when I really really wanted to.
I already know the new name I'd like to change her to but I'm just not sure if I'm being too superstitious or not.
What's the opinion out there with you guys on this superstitious crap???

Im not superstitious at all but understand those that are. With that said isnt there a proper method of retiring a boat name and renaming the boat? I dont remember what it is but i thought i read something on it a few years back.

Do the Denaming and Renaming procedure/ceremony. (Google it). I once had a Chris Craft Constilation that I simply peeled off the old name, and stuck on the new one. The boat SUNK within weeks and was a total loss. On the other hand, I did the denaming and renaming on my Convincor and it has been an awesome boat. Take it for what its worth, but I'm a believer.

This might be a good spot to discuss proper proceedure and fostering/furthering good karma where boating is concerned. Maybe even boat names to avoid( Monkey Spanker comes to mind). One cannot overstate the importance of a properly timed and placed libation in the scheme of things. Keeping the Water Gods happy is an important and sometimes overlooked subject. Remember that time you lost your favorite wrist watch right off of your arm, in the deepest section of the lake? What about that time you were running along and spied that perfectly smooth stretch of calm water only to find some angry rocks just underneath that glassy surface? How about the time you had spent all afternoon stretched out on the bow of the Mate and were met with a hollow click when you hit the starter to head back in? Do not forget to show some love and respect to the Water Gods. Superstition, or just plain good practice?

Gonna look into that denaming/renaming process and see if I can satisfy Poseidon and his cronies.

Would love to hear more stories from the forum regarding any experiences from name changing.

I have heard of a few methods of doing the renaming. Most involve script, sacrifice and rum. It is good practice to not stir or anger the water gods.

always heard the same things...but also heard if you keep a small original name somewhere(even hidden) you will be fine...thats what I did on my Gibson...during the summer months we do a lot of boat names..at least half are name changes....so ????

I changed the 235 name and had 3 extremely good , flawless summers of fun . Im a bit superstitious but knot this topic. Finding an unused name is probably the tough part of it all. Best of luck Kurt and keep your fingers crossed lol .

It's not that bad, Wrench. And remember, there is the most important libation. A few friends present is good too. Do use some pomp and circumstance, don't go about it without seriousness. Do not use cheap wine. Follow the general steps. Don't forget to mention the Four Wind Brothers aloud and by name in your invocation. The Water Gods like fast boats and good drink. They also like to be remembered aloud once in a while.

I have a feeling I already named mine. I had some extra lettering left over when I did the registration. Here in NY us 2A supporters really hate Andy Cuomo. So we came up with FUAC to describe him on the gun forums etc. Well anyways I put FUAC on the back of motor. Does this mean I named the boat FUAC?

I'v seen allot of nice boats for sale with douche bag names on them. One I saw said "thong Hunter" on it. What self respecting young lady is gonna want to ride around in that?
If you're stuck with a name you can't live with I see no choice but go with the re-naming ceremony and feel confident you've complied with the laws of the sea.

Unless there is more than one boat with that name I actually ran into {not literally} the "Thong Hunter" off the coast of Salem Mass two years ago, it was a 25 ft Convincer with a for sale sign on it, --- it had the name Thong Hunter and a decal of a thong next to the name ---- We all agreed it was the worse boat name and graphic ever ---- but it was a pretty nice Check.
