Pulse170 Floor Restoration

Looking real good :thumb: Are you going to replace the floor and stringers with ply or coosa? Can't wait to see her all finished. After I finished my transom w/ coosa I decided to rebuild the stern end of my deck w/ coosa as well. It's so easy to work with. I'll probably use coosa for the floor as well. Advanced plastics has a polyurethane foam product that comes in sheets and I've decided to use it for my stringer replacement. If you havn't already purchased your materials let me know and I'll get a part number. It's alot less expensive than marine grade ply.

Hick where have you been? I haven't bought supplies yet, still looking at all my options. I thought about ply board since it's available locally. The cheapest polyester resin I found so far was at Merton's. Send me the info on the coosa products. Thanks!!!!

Been coaching little league football:D I'll be going by Advanced plastics today and I'll get some info on the foam I'll be using for my stringers. The last couple of weeks have also allowed me to do quite a bit of work on my enforcer. I should have the rear deck( this is a complete redo of the back end...dosn't even look like an o/b :D) and transom completed and hopefully glassed in by sunday; then off to replace the stringers. My goal is to have her ready to paint by january. The wife and boys left yesterday for fall break so I'll have 4 days of uninterupted time to get it done. I should be able to post my progress some time this weekend. I'll post what I find at AP this evening.

I removed the stringers yesterday, they came out in pieces. I still have to remove the gas tank and finish removing the floor back to the transom. I'm guessing Checkmate used some type of body filler to blend the floor to the hull, that stuff is messy. I had sanding dust all over the place, thankfully I'm doing this under a carport instead of in the garage.

Robbie,

Didn't make it to Advanced plastics on friday; ended up using the materials I had to finish the stearn. The closest location to you is in Chattanooga(Ooltewah) toll free no. is 866-423-9277. I plan on going by the nashville location sometime this next week to pick up the foam for my stringers and some fg cloth. I looked on their website and didn't see the foam board. I'll pass on the info when I get it. Click on my blog and you'll find the info on the coosa under "Part 8: Building the transom". I'm at work tonight and will be working at vandy tomorrow night as well....so it dosen't appear I will be posting any updates for a few more days. If you have any questions or need any thing PM me; or call if you still have my number.

Sorry about the stringers. It sucks when you start a project that you think you can handle in a reasonable amount of time and then you end up with double the work.

I have heard/seen these stories many times before. In the 80's & early 90's they were pumping those boats out so fast that corners had to be cut is my guess.

On the bright side, your boat was a little lighter than most!:D

Keep up the good work.

HD, I was afraid that might happen as I started cutting the floor out. I was amazed/suprised at the stringers since Checkmate builds a quality boat. The biggest problem that I've seem on the Pulse was how they attached the seats to the floor. The water was getting in thru the screw holes.:( What the heck it will be stronger and lighter when I'm done.:thumb:
Thanks!!!

Hick,
I'm working 55-60 hrs a week right now myself, so not a problem. I'm going to pull the gas tank today and finish cutting the floor out. I'll take a look and see what you've got/done so far.

Take some more pictures! My seats are still solid and the floor is still flat and stiff, so I'm hoping to avoid what you're doing for a looong time. Actually, I've been toying with the idea of selling the 170 and getting another 2100BR :rof:
At least it's end of October instead of end of May when you're doing this!

Flotation foam

Guys, have any of you that's replaced the floor/transom taken out those flotation boxes out in the back? What did you do in the place of flotation foam?

Depends, do you want your boat to stay floating high enough to drag it to shore, or do you want it to completely sink and have to send divers after it? That's the basic answer to whether to put the floatation foam back in or not :p

I'll have more pictures today. That's why I did that quick patch earlier this year. My suggestion would be to back those screws out and put 3M 5200 to seal them. The other places was the sides or walls that are underneath the console where they attach to the floor.

I was actually thing the same thing (2100BR), just because I would like more room. One thinking is for sure when I do sell the one 170 that person will get a solid boat when I'm done.:thumb:

That's a good enough answer for me:thumb:

On the other hand, I doubt there's any or much floatation foam in a 21' 2100BR, so ya gotta hope the extra life jackets stored in the side pockets and under the seats will float the hull a little....

So I finally got the gas tank out and finished removing the floor. Looks like I'll be replacing the knee supports as well. I've got to find a tool that will help cut where the floor meets the transom. My angle grinder can't get close enough.
The design where the gas tank sits was poorly though of, the water could not get to the bilge area or out of the boat unless I had about 2 or 3" in the bottom. So, I'm going to raise the gas tank enough for water to flow out the back. I'll probably modify a few other areas as well. Here are some pictures of my progress today.

I had to go back and look at some other pictures, but that area in question their was foam on top and damp. I'll check on it tomorrow. I'm hoping for the good, but if not I'll fix that as well.:(
