Skeg warped- bent?

New member
Just purchased 07 2100br with 07 225 opti. when I looked at it in early aug, everything looked good, when i brought it home last weekend i noticed the skeg was a little bent to the pass. side, not bad though but a small curve in it. Noticed it when the paint was a little rubbed off the skeg. something looked odd. Is there any way to straighten it out without braking it off. Had it out today for the last time before putting it away for winter, didn't seem to hamper the speed at all. Have to take some pictures. Will that slow down the performance. Guess the guy who i bought it from brushed up against something and I didn't noticed it at the time when i picked it and he didn't say anything. Sure handles alot nicer than my hydro valero, and the speed is amazing.

I hope it isnt stressed or cracked.

Anything out of line will hamper the performance. It will tend to make the boat pull or lean to one side.

Bent aluminum is usually hit pretty hard. Check it over for stress cracks.

fwiw... are you sure its not supposed to be that way- built in torq tab?

I've never owned a newer mercury- but thats the way my omc lightning lower is... I took pics:

Skeg warped-bent

guess they are making them with a slight curve on the skeg. they have removed the little fin that normally was above the prop for prop/steering torque, and put a curve in the skeg

My guess is it is factory. The Yamahas have that as well. It should bend to the starboard. Reduces steering torque significantly. On my older Merc I added an after market wedge.

i got your skeg

the damned fools club is getting ready to put a patent or our new sailboat gearcase keel. after 1 flight, i hit something and tore up my redone murphy 4 blade. getting ready to weld something on the back of my skeg just to ease my mind from the possibility of the torque breaking catastrophic distruction upon my checkmate full of pirates. dont need skeg w/ 4 blade, but dont trust anti feedback w/star steering. this freaking 75 keeps me from being able turn left at all w chopper. 4 blade feels like powersteering. when your flying under the power of a 75-4 stroke on a classic 21 enchanter, corner of mouth touching ear, you better have your prop right, or weld a torque converter on it.:thumb:after 2 trips hit smtn tore up 2blades on boards floating from docks damaged by moon tides

gone too far not fast enough

im scared to race anybody without being able to carry their passengers. bring it on baby, the small craft advisory creates the condition, that breeds the amunition, that feuls us fools. you better have your crackmate prepared to want go where mine wil go.

hey cowboy, ive got your fix if youve got friends that are welders, but all you need is a quart of body filler, and a pint of whiskey, and balls, until you can find some welders. i need a lefthand 20 case so i can fly my tunnel this winter.

Usally the Torque tab is a bent to the right when looking at it from the rear. If it is to the left (passanger side) it will increase the torque on the wheel and if the bend is really bad it will scrub speed and make it hard to drive.

Use this idea at your own risk...

We have bent a couple of skegs straight with a good c-clamp and some hardwood blocks. Using the c-clamp to pull the skeg in the correct direction, place the blocks of wood between the clamp on both sides of the skeg and shim as required to bend it straight. Crank slowly.... Once we preheated the skeg with a torch (not sure if this helped it bend)

Good luck

same but different

i see you guys emails whenever i get a chance to do something other than bills & estimates on my computer once i get home. i see that people have responded to my technical discussions & comments. im just lucky that i have so much work that i cant engage in talking about setup for my boats, or, reply to your mails. the fact that i havent had the chance to set up einsteins oil fired boiler for the winter season yet, after what hes done for me with my boats, and the prospects of future smiles due to about 15 different boats from 7' to 28' long, that we have sitting in our back yards, and the fact i never would have had any fun on the water till i met this fool from new york. every flight i take in my smilemakers, if i get 1 a week, is what feuls me to keep going. i dont know if ive saved a cent because we do our deal with setup, but its a wonder i havnt had a heart attack from an adrenalin overdose yet. i guess theres 2 worlds. big money, and big smiles. what kind of boat you got?

reply to thread

theres one other difference about the fact im complaining about the torque i feel , my whackey welders aint done yet, and i dont know what prop im putting on next. but one things for sure, we will be flying & smiling till this bay freezes, and my checkmate bottom needs painting because i left some blue paint on the ice in the creek last year, while trying to go to work & fix heat on tangeir. had turn around to take mail boat next day, but not before catching a 4' rockfish. checkmates are fishing boats too

I have to be the only one here that knows where Tangier is and what the mail boat is. The Crockets and the Pruitts on T.I. must get a kick out of you pulling in there in a checkmate. :D
The rock are in the Rapp now, but you won't hear about me pulling one over the side of my 'mate.
