Build my stereo

Sam I am

Well-known member
Okay...got an email from Dean at Checkmate and they can't get Clarion right now, or not soon enough, due to Clarion eliminating their dealers and going direct. Dean doesn't think he can get things set up in time to meet my deadline. Anyway, whatever the reason, I need to buy some electronics and I don't have a clue about stereo equipment.

Criteria:

White, AM/FM, Bluetooth, Sirius/XM, 6 Speakers, 1 Subwoofer, 1 Amp. Under $1000.

Please post links of each item.

I did a large stereo in my Convincor a year or so ago and used all Polk Audio speakers. I think I have 10 in the cockpit (4- 6 1/2" components, 2- 8" subs, 2- 5.5" Subs and 2- 1" tweeters) then I have 2 more 6 1/2" Components and a 12" sub in the cuddy. I think it sounds pretty good. I used two Memphis amps to power it all,a 5 channel for all the speakers in the cockpit and a mono sub amp for the 12" sub in the cuddy. I ran the speakers in the cuddy directly off the head unit (I used an Alpine) os I could kill the amps and play music just in the cuddy for those rare over nights when the wife and I don't have the kiddos with us!!! lol

I'm super happy with the Polk stuff, especially for the price. The grates on the speakers are silver, but that's easily remedied with a can of spray paint. I found my amps on craigslist and saved quite a bit of money on them.

If you want "good" white speakers, you can't beat JL Audio, but that will blow your $1000 budget right out the window.

Corey, did you use marine equipment or just normal auto. I would think since most my equipment is in the cabin, and the boat never sits in the water overnight, for the most part, normal should work fine or not.

Not in my Checkmate, but I've got a Kenwood Marine stereo head, 4 Kenwood speakers, and a self powered Kenwood sub installed in my CJ5:

Front speakers are in dash, rear are in Tuffy boxes on the fender wells:

At around $500-$600 total it's a good sounding system. I think for $1000 you can head to your local car audio shop and get hooked up with a decent system. Or shop the stuff online. Other than the head, I bought everything on Amazon.

All my speakers are marine rated. I figure, if they are in the cockpit, they can get wet. My head unit is an auto one. It sets up high in the cuddy cabin, so if its getting wet, I have way bigger problems than my stereo!!!

I bought some of my stuff from Crutchfield, some off of Amazon and even found some new in the box on craigslist. i just searched everywhere for the best price before I bought.

There are many good quality audio systems for the marine industry. If money wasn't a concern, I would go with high end marine audio such JL audio as Brianh said. Back during the 80's when I installed car audio systems, soundstream and rockford fosgate was the rage. So all depends on what you want and can afford. Sam I would have a dedicated battery, heavy gauge cable and fuse block running the audio system.

Thanks RobB! I'm going to pull the trigger on your set up today. Thanks for making it easy. It will have a dedicated battery. I'm adding the second and a cut off switch. It will also have an on board charger since I have power on the lift. Should be a nice set up.

Glad I could help!! I did notice the speaker grills are different, hope that's ok.

My audio dealer told me that car audio speaker has to have a certain waterproof in them bc they use it into cardoors also

One question Rob, why did you give him two sub amps? The 5 channel amp will run all 6 speakers along with 300 watts to the sub. The sub package came with a 200 watt sub amp, but I assume he'll use the 300 watts from teh multi-channel amp.

I think a better choice would be the 10" JL Audio sub that actually about $40 cheaper than the sub you picked.

Or perhaps this MTX 12":

Either that or drop down to a 4 channel amp to run the 6 speakers, but I'd choose the better sub.

I changed my whole system last year, Jensen Marine and Alpine Marine.
I bought them directly from the Manufacturers just google Jensen Marine or Alpine Marine

I have a Jensen Dash unit and Alpine amp and speakers. Also I picked up head unit remanufactured It was like Half price. The mounting area on my Enforcer was small so I went with this unit.

The combination of Jensen and Alpine makes a kick ass system.
Everybodys taste in music is different, so my combination may not be to your liking.
If you do, send me a message and I will get you my exact model numbers.

I think when I finish my Eluder I'm going to get one of those small round stereos that fits in a Speedo/Tach hole. I'll use my speedo hole, since I use a GPS unit to get speed readings now, and I'm tired of having to constantly deal with broken pitot tubes with the speedos.

Good catch, didn't see that when I was picking out the system. Basically wanted to keep all the components from the same manufacturer. I'd go with the better sub as well.
